A magnificent film! One of the best in the sci-fi horror genre. Excellent acting, remarkable special effects, and the mysterious, tense atmosphere of the underground tunnels. And the sounds—those sounds (so perfectly imitated by the shoeshine boy)—are terrifying, cold, and merciless. They perfectly capture the world of insects, perhaps the most rational and the most brutal.

Mira Sorvino’s performance was beyond praise—emotional and believable. Yes, the scene with her unbelievable rescue from the mutants’ lair is certainly a bit over the top, so to speak, but the film doesn’t lose any of its momentum or narrative tension.

Jeremy Northam convincingly demonstrates that health department officials are very resourceful and courageous people (or at least capable of being so).

The cockroaches themselves deserve special mention—monstrously repulsive creatures, though that’s exactly what a horror film needs!
