A wealthy man died suddenly. He was no longer young, but he was energetic and full of life; however, his relatives welcomed his death with joy, as he had been a rather selfish and mean man. All his relatives gathered for his funeral, including his daughter—the only one who loved him with all her heart. While the mourners were discussing who would inherit what, the deceased’s soul established telepathic contact with his daughter and tried, through her, to find out who was responsible for his death.

What happens to the soul after death? There are many claims that it does not die along with the body, but passes into another world. Or, for one reason or another, it remains on earth—sometimes for the sake of revenge or retribution, and sometimes simply to uncover the truth. So, “Voices from Beyond.”

Lucio Fulci’s talent is multifaceted. This is particularly evident when comparing works such as “Voices from Beyond” with, for example, “The House on the Edge of the Cemetery.” While the latter is a decent thriller with elements of the supernatural—and a rather creepy one at that—“Voices from Beyond” is more of a mystery, only slightly embellished with otherworldly phenomena. Yes, there are scary moments in it, but it primarily intrigues the viewer with its mystery and suspense, prompting them to try to figure out who the killer is while waiting for the resolution.

Overall, I think the film is meant to remind people of what almost everyone’s life is built on—family, parents, and children. After all, a spouse may not always be honest or reliable. But one’s own flesh and blood—parents and children—will never wish you harm, and you can always count on them. This provides a logical explanation for why Giorgio’s spirit appears in visions specifically to his daughter and father. And who says that only sappy romances and gritty dramas help strengthen family bonds?

Once again, Lucio Fulci’s talent is astonishing. He knows exactly how to blend the beautiful with the grotesque, and he does so with such professionalism and sophistication. The picturesque landscapes in Rosie’s visions give way to nightmares in Mario’s dreams and scenes set in a grave. Not everyone can appreciate this kind of beauty, but personally, I’m in awe. It’s wonderful. It’s magnificent.
