The werewolves are back! Not even forty days have passed since the funeral, and tensions in Los Angeles are running high once again. Random rockers are being devoured whole, and the brother of the late TV host refuses to believe what’s happening. Fortunately, Sir Christopher Lee has materialized from the depths of centuries-old mysticism and has clearly explained to all the skeptics that evil is real, and that we must urgently wipe out all the werewolves—otherwise, a wolf apocalypse on the American continent is inevitable. But first, they need to head to Transylvania, since filming there is more cost-effective.

A group consisting of a professor-hunter, the heroine’s friend from the first film, and her brother—the sheriff—set out to hunt down the evil creatures in Romanian villages. This is definitely fun to watch, as the architecture and landscapes do the lion’s share of the work in terms of atmosphere simply by being in the frame, plus the local color. Another compelling argument is the set design. From the cozy resort for vacationing wolves in the first film, we find ourselves in Mother Stryba’s witchy boudoir, where debauchery and wolfish revelry thrive. The abundance of nudity on screen and the grotesque erotic elements guarantee this.

The action unfolds to a killer old-school gothic soundtrack—it is, after all, the ’80s—and this time the wolves are more resilient and far more artistic, though the film does have a comedic undertone in places. Not even Sir Christopher Lee’s serious expression can save it, and Romania—which so often flashes by in horror films—evokes various associations; at times it seemed as if Radu Vladislav, or any other monster from Charlie Band’s panopticon, was about to jump out from around the corner, but no, this is still a sequel to the first "Howl". It’s more dynamic than its predecessor, but the budget constraints are noticeable—though they’re offset by the atmosphere and the erotic presentation. You could say they draped the film in eroticism wherever they could—and even where they shouldn’t have—and this naturally pushed the werewolves into the background. Seriously, at one point I even forgot that this was a sequel to the first “Howl” and felt as if I were watching a movie about a Satanist mass in a cursed castle. And yet this turned out to be a plus, because the atmosphere is more than worthy, and the werewolves were presented in an unexpected light of light eroticism.
