Horror movies—which I’m tempted to call “alien-themed” (due to the otherworldly nature of their main villains)—have long used the theme of an alien invasion to entertain and/or terrify audiences. We’ve seen it all—lizards hiding beneath human skin, aliens using human bodies as incubators for their offspring, and simply aliens of all shapes, types, and levels of technological advancement. The film *Body Snatchers* (1993), however, offers a glimpse into a theme that, while not exactly new, is nonetheless quite compelling and even somewhat frightening: a scenario where it becomes nearly impossible to distinguish an alien from a human just by looking at them…

The film itself, in terms of its special effects and overall tone, is a run-of-the-mill entry in the genre, leaning toward horror and the typical frantic chase scenes from the invaders, but it doesn’t delve into the technical intricacies of the aliens’ infiltration or their first appearance among the orderly ranks of a U.S. military base. Before the cloning process, the aliens themselves are a sort of colorful “mess” that you wouldn’t want to get your hands dirty with—and which, to make matters worse, rather disgustingly shoves its thin tentacles into every orifice in the head area. After this assimilation, the human is replaced by a clone, and on screen he already looks like an ordinary Earthling with somewhat unusual behavior and a truly bizarre way of addressing his comrades.

In terms of horror, aside from the appearance of the alien creatures (which don’t do much anyway, but at least run just like humans), the film focuses more on the idea of “what if they’re really already among us,” plus conversations like “that’s not my mother!” and a scene I particularly liked with children’s drawings at school depicting a bunch of aliens and one human newcomer.

Aside from the theme of conquest, which really takes off in the second half of the film, we’re first introduced to the main character’s family and their arrival at one of the bases for an environmental inspection—the father’s direct responsibility. Here, the theme of the invasion is doled out in bits and pieces, but it’s done quite effectively. The second part is entirely devoted to rescue attempts and the main character’s new acquaintance—it’s slightly less polished, even though this is where the spectacle is supposed to be at its peak, but it’s still watchable. The ending is predictable and quite fantastical.

As for its educational value—the characters will teach viewers how to play “Never.” As for the characters themselves—it’s worth noting the familiar faces of actors from not-so-popular movies and TV shows (perhaps with the exception of Forest Whitaker—he’s surely known to everyone).
Gabriel Anwar, in the course of playing the lead role, managed to bare some skin a couple of times along the way; however, these aren’t scenes shot specifically for a sleazy audience, but rather a natural part of her transformation that the filmmakers chose not to hide (i.e., don’t expect any eroticism, but just keep your eyes peeled so you don’t miss a glimpse of something spicy).
