In an effort to lift James’s grandson out of his despondency, Geppetto gives him his latest creation—a wooden puppet named Pinocchio, who turns out to be alive. At first, this unusual gift becomes a true friend to the boy, but soon something terrifying begins to emerge behind his affection.

Pinocchio: Unstrung is the fifth film in the Twisted Childhood Universe (The Poohniverse) and easily also the best film in the franchise. The franchise has improved and come a long way since the first Winnie-The-Pooh: Blood And Honey film.

Pinocchio: Unstrung follows a young boy named James (Cameron Bell) as he meets a new friend, Pinocchio. Side characters like Geppetto (Richard Brake) and Cricket (Robert Englund) also add a lot to the film.

For the first time in the franchise the acting makes the characters come across as actual people that I actually cared about. I was intrigued by the story and the characters, something I never thought I would say about a movie in this franchise. Just like with the previous installment (Bambi: The Reckoning) there is emotion in this film which helps it stand out from the emotionless, earlier installments in the Poohniverse. I really love and appreciate this.

I had a smile on my face from beginning to end. The biggest crime of the Twisted Childhood Universe is that the films are way too serious. With this installment the inherent silliness of the franchise seems to have been embraced since this film is pretty funny. It does still get pretty dark and serious at times. It doesn't completely shift the tone of the franchise, it just adds a little bit of comedy. In my opinion this is the reason this movie shines.

This film is also just as carnage-filled as the rest of the films in the series. This might even be the nastiest film in the franchise. The practical gore effects are amazing vile and nasty. I would say that there are Terrifier levels of bloodshed in this film and I loved every second of it.

The blood and guts aren't to only practical effects in the film. Pinocchio himself is also a practical puppet and it's awesome. Characters like Cricket still required cgi to be brought to life. The cgi isn't the best, this is a low-budget film after all. The cgi is far from the worst I've seen, it didn't ruin the film for me, it's fine.

In the end I had a great time at the theater with this one. I do recommend this film to fans of the horror genre. If you haven't been a fan of the Twisted Childhood Universe up until this point, I still urge you to check this film out. It is miles better than anything we have ever seen before from the franchise. If you're already a fan of the Poohniverse you will probably also enjoy this film.
