Review 4K Movie

Full Moon's love for their "Lord of the Dolls" franchise is hilarious. Unlike a lot of other films by the company, where most sequel plots are blatantly "out of thin air," in Lord of the Dolls there is a close connection between the individual parts of the franchise. Of course, when as many as two sequels to the same film are released within the same year, it is not necessary to speak of their quality, of course. However, the case of Lord of the Dolls is a rare exception: in 1991, the second and third parts of the franchise were released, but this did not prevent both of them from performing well. Perhaps the secret of their peculiar success is that the third part is not a continuation of the second one: if "Lord of the Dolls 2" was a direct continuation of the original film, "Lord of the Dolls 3: Revenge of Toulon" tells about the events that happened before the first "Lord of the Dolls". Thus, the viewer is given an insight into why the Germans tracked down André Toulon, the puppet master, in the prologue of the original film, and what the man even represented before his first death.

In fact, part three also stands out in contrast to part two. There is no characteristic "Lord of the Puppets" story here about people with unusual abilities or "high" technique. Admittedly, the third part is best viewed precisely as a peculiar biography of the puppet master André Toulon. It's worth noting that, among other things, the threequel also tells us the backstory of every doll except the Torch doll, which first appeared in the second part of the franchise, and therefore, logically, could not touch the plot of this film (had not yet been invented, since Toulon created it shortly before his second death). The attention to detail is what's most appealing about the threequel, for Full Moon graciously answers every question the viewer might have had when watching the original film.

Of course, a person who didn't like the previous parts of Lord of the Dolls doesn't need all the revelations about the puppet master's past for nothing. Therefore, we must inform in advance that the threequel is recommended for viewing only to those who have been moved by the story of the dolls from Full Moon from the very beginning. It does not matter what the viewer's opinion on the second part of the franchise is, because the threequel is closely connected with the original "Lord of the Dolls". Certainly Full Moon is familiar with marketing. The fact that the threequel was subtitled "Revenge of Toulon" is just a marketing move. The fact is that the subtitle clearly refers to the ending of Lord of the Dolls 2. Thus, they have at one time brought the film to the attention of those who simply wanted to know the continuation of the franchise's story. Caution has always been clearly evident in Full Moon's actions, and so the idea that a threequel might fail if they openly stated that it was a step into the franchise's past certainly occurred to them. However, against all odds, the title "Revenge of Toulon" is also quite appropriate for the plot of the threequel.

Verdict. To be frank, "Lord of the Dolls 3: Revenge of Toulon" will appeal only to those who were once impressed by the original "Lord of the Dolls." If when watching it you repeatedly noticed the extraordinary depth and thoughtfulness of the film, rare for Full Moon's "creativity", you will probably be curious to know that you were completely right. The proof is in "Lord of the Dolls 3: Revenge of Toulon," in which viewers are graciously treated to a far-fetched backstory to the franchise.
