Madison wants a baby more than anything, and for that, being pregnant, she is willing to endure the attacks of her abusive husband. One night, after another of his aggressive outbursts, a black malevolent entity sneaks into the couple's house, killing her husband and attacking Madison. After losing her child, the woman returns home and tries to move on with her life, but soon she is haunted by creepy visions of murders that soon turn out to be real.

James Wan, albeit briefly, returns to the world of horror films. His new and so long-awaited work under the laconic title "Malignant" has already been released and managed to impress me. And here I am in a hurry to share my review.

The story centers on a young woman, Madison (Annabelle Wallis), who was visited by the 'devil himself' at an early age and because of this she now sees future murders in frighteningly realistic dreams. Does the heroine have any chance of preventing them or of warning anyone?

'Malignant' was originally meant to be an adaptation of James Wan's author comic book 'Malignant Man,' but the director later stated that 'this is definitely not a superhero movie. "Malignant Man is an original thriller not based on any source material. The original idea for the picture came from Van himself and his lady of the heart and star of the "Spell" and "Curse of the Nun" trilogy, Ingrid Bisu. The title role is played by another Van favorite, actress Annabelle Wallis.

It's likely that seasoned screen horror fans and couch critics (my favorites) have already begun to understand which way the plot will unfold. It really is amazingly predictable, but believe me, it's not as simple as it may seem at first glance. There is a turning point, or rather there are 2 and they radically confuse everything, but not for me. What I expected is what I saw, namely going beyond my horror comforts as a director and his departure from the expected screamers. James Wan is loved by many for his memorable visual handwriting, which sets him apart from others. And the camerawork in 'Evil' is at its best: the camera moves freely around the characters, follows them on their heels, flies over their heads. Standing shots with careful symmetry and close-ups of the protagonists' faces are no less successful.

The director recently told his fans about the origins of all this beauty in social networks. He was inspired by beloved movie classics: the works of Brian de Palma and David Cronenberg. Also, 'Malignant' took a lot from jallo films. These are the kind of vintage Italian thrillers with spectacular bloody scenes, (a big hello to Dario Argento and Mario Bava) from where Van borrowed his love of ominous red glow and cool blue hues.

I loved the atmosphere of the film, its incomprehensible configuration leading up to an incredible finale that will make your jaw drop. What you see in the finale is very cool and meaty - trust me. There are of course Van's favorite moments and places that he can't do without... it concerns the huge abandoned buildings and of course the basements. In general, there are some stamps (you can't do without them), but the work with light and graphics are flawless. Well, what to say about his best friend and collaborator, composer Joseph Bishara, he here as always surprised the concept of music 'urban eclecticism' and served everything perfectly.

Honestly, as a fan of the horror genre and James Wan's work, I'm pleased with this new work and look forward to his new horror film. I don't think 'Evil' will have a sequel, but who knows?
