Riley struggles with alcohol addiction and lives off her brother. One day, having succumbed to the entreaties of her boyfriend, who offered to break into an unguarded container, which most likely contains something valuable, the girl together with him penetrates into the vault and finds there a strange puzzle, similar to a Rubik's cube. The thing fascinates Riley, she begins to twist its parts, not realizing that in this way it is possible to summon cenobites - terrifying creatures with sadistic tendencies from another dimension.

Coming from the video arcades of the 90s, I am a long-time fan of the first four installments of the franchise. I won't discuss here what it turned into later on, as much has been written about that, and, as they say, let's not dwell on the sad stuff. I'll talk about something else. It's always difficult to read a book after it's been adapted for the screen, when your memory slips in ready-made images of the characters. Nevertheless, I read Barker's novel in the 2000s, trying as much as possible to abstract myself from the episodes I had seen. And it became clear that Barker, accidentally or deliberately, had greatly distorted the idea in the film. Doug Bradley's Pinhead is undoubtedly a brilliant and charismatic character. However, does he convey the atmosphere of indifference and irrational logic of the Cenobites described in the book? In my opinion, no. In him, we do not see the indifferent and sad researcher who came to expand his understanding of the sensuality of another unfortunate soul who collected the box. Pinhead is a hungry demon waiting to be let into our world to satisfy his hunger, and unwilling to leave. There must be good and evil in the film, and he is assigned the role of evil with his gang of helpers, who must be defeated and driven back. Hurray, it worked out, happy ending. In my opinion, this is not at all the idea of the story: be afraid of your desires, their embodiment may turn out to be terrible, and there will be no way back. The Senobites are just a tool, not antagonistic heroes.

So there you have it. Despite all the shortcomings of The Resurrected - 2022, it is the closest adaptation to the text. Not in terms of the plot, of course, there is no Frank, Kirsty, etc. here. But in terms of the atmosphere and concept of the Senobites. The “refinements” in the form of several stages of the box's transformation are, in my opinion, quite successful and a fresh find. But what really caught my eye and spoiled my impression of this film was the Senobites' susceptibility to the laws of physics. Remember, according to the plot, these are creatures from another dimension, to which they take the sufferer. Well, a senobit cannot run after a person! And it is also impossible to trap a senobit with a sliding door in our world. And of course, it will not work to stop them and make them wait by closing all the doors with bars. They are inevitable. At first, this principle seemed to be followed, and I especially liked the boundary between realities right in the moving van. But then this game of hide-and-seek in the castle ruined everything.

But overall, I think the epic has been given a new lease on life, and I'll be following the news.
