Wanting to get her husband's mom's inheritance, Louise hides his sudden death from a heart attack: she dumps his body in a lake and makes it look like he went on an urgent business trip. Meanwhile, her husband's relatives gather at their Irish castle to perform an annual ritual commemorating the death of his younger sister, who drowned in a local pond as a child. Louise begins to fawn over her demanding mother-in-law and decides to indulge her morbid grief over her dead daughter.

When watching this old horror flick, you should pay attention not to the name of the director and co-writer Francis Ford Coppola, but to the name of the producer Roger Corman—a multi-tasker of low-budget genre films in categories B, C, etc. As is well known, the entire production of such a film took only a couple of weeks. In this film, the speed of the shooting process is palpable. The actors underplay their roles; the script is underdeveloped; it is shot as if it were not the 1960s, but the 1940s.

The plot exploits Hitchcock's “Psycho,” a “fresh” hit of the time. The first third is filled with an oppressive detective spirit, and by the middle, it stays the course of the fashionable Italian giallo with decapitations, imaginary ghosts, and close-ups of victims. In essence, it's pure grindhouse. Only without the humor. The plot is uninteresting and easy to follow. What remains is an atmosphere that only fans of mothball-scented horror movies will find appealing.

As for the director, he is still far from the master's style. Kormann's standards reign supreme here. Only 10 years later will Coppola change the face of world cinema and begin to consistently release masterpieces that he will toil over for years.
