Review 4K Movie

In my memory, this is the first series in which the first series is allocated less money than the subsequent series, which can be seen with the naked eye. It would seem that it is literally a presentation series, which largely affects the desire of the viewer to look further or stop, but the second and subsequent series were much brighter and more revealing.

Let's take a closer look at each criterion that I have or have not had any questions about.

1) Chronology of events and introduction to the world of narrative.

As a viewer familiar with the universe of the 'Witch', I easily understood what was happening, but I cannot deny that the transition between stories and events was too rapid. Especially when all these events take place at different intervals, up to several centuries. And the viewer is not informed about these time intervals, but only briefly mentioned the period of wandering hero or age, and the viewer must already guess how much time has passed from one event to another, given that the characters do not age and the world does not change. Why the heroes slow aging, also silent, the viewer himself must understand that this is a feature of wizards, witches, etc.

The events of the whole story are almost scattered throughout the season. At first we are shown one, and after a few episodes show the events that led to those we have already seen. And it seems to be a pretty good way of storytelling, but it happens instantly, and a lot of questions arise from that.

Separate series can suddenly start with some local history, as a multi-season detective series, in which each series, it's a separate story. In this case, the mercenary witch about another order or another whim. And the episodes are only eight and it's only season one.

2. The quality of special effects, sound accompaniment, etc.

I did not like the work on individual episodes, where the heroes literally jump into the frame from behind the corner, as if it were a theater scene and they were waiting behind the scenes of their release. There are lots of episodes like that, and it looks like most of the budget went to Henry Cavill. The narrative takes place in tight spaces, 80% of the time the picture is shot close-up to cover less of the background. But all the rare terrain shows and other large-scale shots/ episodes turned out very well. If the budget allowed the entire series to be shot with such a rich picture, it would be chic.

In general, the question of budget for the universe of 'The Witch' is very important, because it is a fantasy world, there is a lot of magic, magic, mutations and spectacular skirmishes. In the first series, the Blaviken skirmish and the Zintra massacre are stunningly elaborate, but the cities themselves are only shown in narrow alleys and under the wall, the viewer has to think about the scale of events on their own.

The atmosphere is very limited within a particular room or small area, no scale is felt, as in "Game of Thrones". Most likely, it is the result of the operator's work. Working with sound during dialogues is also far from ideal. For example, in taverns, background noise does not create any atmosphere at all.

3. Playing actors.

The first 2-3 series most actors only warm up and literally squeeze out the acting game, not play. It's like watching a low-profile series of actors who have not graduated from high school. It's very noticeable in Zintra and Aretuz events. In subsequent episodes, they're more or less starting to show themselves.

Separately I remember the game Joey Betty (Buttercup), Mayanna Böring (Tisaya) and Ani Chalotra (Jennifer), played very well. Henry Cavill (Heralt) and Freya Allan (Ciri) also played well. The rest of the actors were not remembered very much, some, except for the bad game.

4. Plot.

The plot is almost a book story. Of course, strongly, very much reduced, missed a lot, or rather a huge number of details. Most of these details just explains what they eat with and what they eat with, but the series decided not to explain anything, as if filmed exclusively for fans of the universe.

In addition to the short story, the lives of the characters who are originally alive are interrupted. There are plot twists, which are almost redesigned and very different from the book canon. Perhaps these events will have a strong impact on the side branches of the plot, but, the main plot, so far, not much affected 'otsebyatina'.

5. General impressions.

I don't care much about black characters in the series instead of the canon, but I didn't like the absence of the Slavic atmosphere. Not because I am close to this culture, but because the whole universe of 'The Witch' is formed in Slavic culture. Western critics are outraged by the complicated names of the heroes, but they are not even aware that from the cultural primary source only names remain.

I involuntarily compare the 'Witch' to the 'Game of Thrones', but I am well aware that the world of 'Game of Thrones' is not so demanding to special effects, frankly speaking only episodes with dragons and mass skirmishes needed special effects. And the 'Witch' is all made up of special effects, even combat, because a mutant can't fight like a common man, let alone with a dragon.
