Following the 63rd Senshudo Tournament, the Japanese Ministry of Education decides to close the Oarai Girls' Academy, despite their recent triumph at the championship. To save the academy, Miho and her team must win a match against a university team. For this difficult battle, Miho and the others turn to their old friends from other schools for help, as well as new friends from the Tihatan Academy and Keizoku High School.

Girls und Panzer the Movie is an anime that doesn’t try to be a deep war drama, and that’s exactly why it works so well. The film takes a familiar concept from the series and amps it up to nearly the maximum: more vehicles, more heroines, a larger scale, and even crazier—yet incredibly thrilling—tank battles.

Plot-wise, the story follows a fairly straightforward sports-adventure formula, where the team once again has to fight to save their school, so the overall plot is easy to predict. But in this case, the predictability doesn’t detract from the viewing experience, because the main focus here isn’t the plot, but rather how the film builds up to the final battle and how powerfully it delivers each scene.

The film’s strongest element is the staging of the tank battles. Reviewers specifically praise the smooth camera work, the transitions between wide shots and views from inside the vehicles, as well as the sound design, which makes every shot and every collision feel particularly impactful. The final battle in an abandoned amusement park is often highlighted as one of the most spectacular scenes in the entire franchise thanks to its inventive use of the setting and its almost theme-park-like dynamics.
