“Casino Royale” is a very successful reboot of the Bond franchise, in which James Bond—portrayed for the first time by Daniel Craig is shown to be tougher, more vulnerable, and more down-to-earth. The film stands out noticeably from its predecessors: there’s less irony, but more tension, emotion, and a sense of real stakes, especially in the poker game scenes and Bond’s relationship with Vesper.

The film works brilliantly both as a spy thriller and as a story about trust, betrayal, and the price of the profession. The action is shot with energy and without excessive CGI, and Craig and Eva Green form one of the most memorable pairs in the series. This is one of those Bond films that works equally well as both a spectacle and a more serious exploration of the character.
