Story Movie

The second assignment for James Bond is to rescue and smuggle out of Istanbul a Russian agent, a beautiful woman in possession of the secret of the top-secret Lector encryption machine, and the machine itself. Into the easy going combination enters Spectra's hitherto unknown agent #1, Ernest Stavro Blofeld. His task is not only to escalate relations between Britain and the Soviet Union, to return the Lector to Russia for a large reward, but also to avenge the death of Dr. No by luring Bond into a clever trap.

Review 4K Movie

Following the overwhelming success of Dr. No, the authors promptly released the second installment of Sean Connery's adventures as Bond, From Russia with Love, a year later.

The result was not merely a sum of the same elements, but rather something greater, more appealing, and more intriguing. No! It was the sequel that James Bond deserved at that time. Along with Dr. No, this film harmoniously laid the foundations for all retro spy films and various parodies, and presented many original ideas that, strangely enough, are still used today.

The elastic face masks from Mission: Impossible and Mission: Impossible 2 are simply copied from here. A watch with a noose—no problem! Dr. Evil from Austin Powers, you say. Don't be ridiculous! He's the spitting image of Blofeld, the main enemy of the Bond played by Connery. The authors of From Russia with Love, yes, they are the ones who, along with Ian Fleming, came up with and depicted all this in 1963.

Unlike the first film, the events of the second film take place in several locations in Europe, with the exception of Jamaica, and end in Venice. It should be noted that later, when Roger Moore became Agent 007, the variety of countries and famous cities where our favorite secret agent would apply his destructive, deductive, and charming skills would be taken up to the present day as one of the fundamental points of the series.

It's even awkward to talk about Sean Connery as Bond again, because his performance speaks for itself. But the film features another essential attribute of the series—Q—and, of course, along with him, the enemies of Her Majesty's Secret Service have acquired a headache in the form of all the gadgets, gizmos, and contraptions that Q supplies to James. It's a shame that Q isn't in the Daniel Craig films. It's like rubbing salt in the wound, because this funny old man will help Britain's most famous agent until “The World Is Not Enough,” which is already the Pierce Brosnan era.

And finally, a little about the music. Now the opening credits will always be as cool as they are here, but strangely, the film's title theme, Matt Munro's From Russia with Love, doesn't play during them; it plays at the end, in Venice, where it fits perfectly. And in the credits, the intriguing melody does a much better job of fulfilling its role after SUCH a prologue. But this is an exception to the rule; it won't be like this in future films.
