Story Movie

Review 4K Movie

The victory of *Wild at Heart* at the 1990 Cannes Film Festival irritated nearly all influential and popular critics. In their opinion, David Lynch and his “tabloid melodrama” shouldn’t have received such an award at such a prestigious film festival. Nineteen years later, Lynch would describe his Palme d’Or as “the worst thing that ever happened to him.”

Sailor (Nicolas Cage) and Lulu (Laura Dern) are in love, but Lulu’s mother does everything she can to prevent her from seeing her boyfriend. Marietta (Diane Ladd)—Lulu’s mother—sends a Black man to Sailor with orders to kill him. Without missing a beat, Sailor defends himself and, in a fit of rage, beats the messenger to death by slamming his head against the marble floor. Sailor is sent to prison and is forced to say goodbye to his beloved for 22 months and 18 days. After Sailor’s release, the lovers reunite and decide to head to California—despite the travel restriction imposed on Sailor—passing through New Orleans, San Antonio, and the fictional “Big Tuna.”

Nicolas Cage and Laura Dern gave excellent performances; you’ll remember these “Bonnie and Clyde” for a long time to come. I think that after watching this, you’ll definitely find your own symbol of personal freedom in your wardrobe, just like Sailor did. The character that stood out to me more than any other was the toothless lout played by Willem Dafoe (whom I initially mistook for Steve Buscemi). By the way, Chris Isaak’s song became so popular precisely after *Wild at Heart*. Angelo Badalamenti, as usual, created a magical soundtrack for Lynch that would fit perfectly into some heartwarming fantasy film.

'Wild at Heart,‘ like almost all of Lynch’s films, despite its complexity, tells a very simple story that can be summarized in two or three sentences. 'Wild at Heart’ is a fairy tale, except it takes place not in a fictional world, but in reality—in 20th-century America. That said, Lynch makes no secret of his inspiration from *The Wizard of Oz*. The characters compare their journey to Los Angeles to the “Yellow Brick Road” leading to the “Emerald City,” a clear reference to David’s love for Los Angeles—and indeed, all of California. Throughout the film, Lulu and Sailor fight for their love in a monstrous world. The characters face obstacles in their relationship time and again, but each time they overcome them and stay together nonetheless.

The film didn’t leave a particularly strong impression on me, but it didn’t disappoint me either. In fact, *Wild at Heart* is a road movie. Throughout the film, the characters drive, stop, have sex, and dance to rock ’n’ roll. The atmosphere, just like in *Mulholland Drive*, is unique here. Lynch portrays America literally through the eyes of lovers ablaze with passion. The nighttime and daytime drives through the desert are mesmerizing. Nevertheless, *Wild at Heart* didn’t become my favorite David Lynch film, given the backdrop of *The Highway to Nowhere*, *Mulholland Drive*, and *Blue Velvet*. There’s nothing unusual about the story in *Wild at Heart*; on the contrary, it’s pure kitsch. But despite its clichés, it’s Lynch himself who makes the film remarkable. He has the ability to transform even the most uninteresting story into his own unique, bleak two-hour world.
