Story Movie

1914, East Africa. Gin-smelling Captain Charlie sails his steamboat to the Christian mission village of Reverend Samuel and his unmarried sister Rosa, who, amidst the wild African jungle, act as if they are still in good old England. But war is sweeping into Africa as well.

German soldiers storming into the mission burn down the village and hijack the inhabitants. The experience has badly affected the condition of the reverend, soon he dies, and Rose has to flee with Charlie. The prim missionary and the reckless captain, quarreling incessantly with each other, sail down the river on their way to dangerous and romantic adventures.

Review 4K Movie

Bogart plays a Canadian drunken engineer who came to Africa and stayed there. When World War I breaks out in Europe, his character has to take on board the sister of an English missionary who died because the Germans abused him and his parish. A touching, somewhat cynical drunkard and a prim Englishwoman embark on a river journey full of danger and adventure, with the ultimate goal of torpedoing a German battleship that dominates the waters of Central Africa.

For most of the movie there are only two actors on the screen - Bogart and Katharine Hepburn. The action takes place on Bogart's hero's small boat, proudly named 'The African Queen', and all attention is given to the characters and the development of their relationships.

Initially, Bogart's hero appears as a cynical drunkard who doesn't even care that there is a war in Europe. And the heroine Hepburn - sophisticated Rosie - seems too arrogant for those places where she was taken. But the first joint adventures bring the heroes together, and it turns out that all these features - just masks, behind which are hidden risk-loving and adventurous people who are united and loneliness.

Bogart received an Oscar for this movie, and deservedly so. His Charlie is very sweet and charismatic. In principle, drinking Bogart to portray a drinking hero was not difficult, but, nevertheless, Charlie disposes to himself and watching his development in the course of the movie is very interesting. To be fair, it should be noted that is not inferior to Bogart and Katharine Hepburn, who was bypassed in the distribution of 'Oscars'. Undeservedly. Watching the transformation of a refined sister of a priest into an adventurous adventurer is very entertaining and instructive.

The movie is stunning in its kindness and naivety. The ease with which the characters go through all the trials and the surprising humanity with which the director approaches the depiction of the course of the war in Africa make the movie perfect for family viewing. Naive, with smile-inducing special effects in some places, but touching and kind movie with beautiful and charismatic actors will perfectly help to brighten the evening and plunge into the atmosphere of love and adventure.
