Cinema was not always like it is now. 75 years ago there were no computer graphics, no possibility to shoot bright and dynamic movies. Back then, movies were shot almost in home conditions: a scene in a pavilion, a couple of props, black-and-white film of not the best quality and combined shooting in scenes with cars.

“Scarface” was shot in 1932, at the very dawn of the movie industry, so this movie can't be condemned for being black and white and having poor quality. Once upon a time, movies were also like this, far from perfect and far from the kind of movies we are used to these days.

The gangster is the protagonist. A perfect figure for the cinema of the time. He solved any problem with the language of arms, moved higher and higher on the social ladder, and personified strength.

America was tired of the Great Depression, which left a big imprint on its history. Gangsters became those who had no other choice: difficult childhood, psychological problems, no status in society, everything pushed future Al Capone to get on the criminal road and follow it to the end...to the end of his days.

Tony Camonte is the unicum of the gangster world. A man with a funny gait, unattractive appearance, monkey grimaces, but the main thing that distinguished him from other gangsters - this love of cruelty, murder and violence. He loved to kill and could only speak the language of the gun. His road was a road lined with the corpses of cops, enemies and buddies.

Paul Mooney is an actor who personified the era of the 30s, along with James Cagney and Edward Robinson, who also starred in gangster films. Mooney perfectly embodied the image of a man, ready to do anything for his boss, that would get out in the people and get his charming girlfriend. Paul Mooney is a master of grimaces. Tony's grimaces and smirks are so skillfully shown by him that you want to applaud.

Despite the entire cast of the movie, very strong and impressive (Ann Dvorak, Karen Morley, Osgood Perkins and George Raft) I would like to mention the last one. Raft doesn't have as big a role as Mooney, and his character has far less dialog, but this actor plays with a terrific eye throughout the movie. So stunning, in fact, that it makes you want to applaud him too.

Lastly, a word about Huard Hawkes, without this most talented director, there wouldn't be this movie.

“Scarface” is monstrous brutality brought to the screen. Of course, now the movie looks ordinary and does not seem so cruel, but if you mentally travel back 75 years and look at the movie from a different angle, it will be clear why it was censored and not released. This is a unique movie about a unique gangster. Movies like this were hardly ever made and certainly not being made now. “Scarface” is a rarity, a rarity that has gone down in history forever, a rarity that can be revisited and watched again and again to see Tony Camonte's grimaces. A movie that has gone down in history.
