Story Movie

1967 Newark, New Jersey. Little Tony Soprano admires his father's business partner - Richard Moltisanti, nicknamed Dickie. He responsibly leads a part of the business entrusted to him by his father, a local crime boss, and, unlike other mafiosi, does not hesitate to deal with blacks. When riots break out in the city, provoked by police brutal treatment of a black taxi driver, Dickie takes an impulsive act and uses the surrounding chaos as a cover.
Review 4K Movie
The premiere of this prequel was postponed several times due to COVID-19, but finally it was released on the Netflix platform.
One of the interesting moments that the role of the young Anthony Soprano was played by the son of James Gandolfini.
And, being a fan of the series, I was interested in this film, especially that the trailer gave hope for it.
The film begins with an introduction on behalf of the well-known, but a little dead, Criss Moltisanti.
An interesting point is that on the movie poster on Kinopoisk, the slogan has a subtext: 'Those who made Tony Sopranos',
And for two hours he tells us about the events and lives of Johnny Boy, Junior Corrado, Dick Moltisanti and many others. Many familiar heroes are not shown to us, but are mentioned by name (for example, Hashes) or are shown, but in passing (for example, Polly)
David Chase never flirted with viewers in the original version of the series, but watching the film gives the impression that this is the only reason the film was made.
In fact, the film is only about one person - Dick Moltisanti, whose character is revealed to us more or less. He, of course, performs a number of contradictory acts, but still impresses the viewer with his behavior and appearance.
But we do not see, in spite of all his relationship with Tony, that he has any strong influence on his formation (of course, if you do not count his constantly patting on the cheeks of young Tony).
The rest of the heroes are just decoration in this story, they are just for the background - their characters are not disclosed or disclosed in an extremely blurry way - we do not penetrate to them with any empathy or ordinary interest.
Of course, we will find out some interesting and shocking moments that were not mentioned in the series, but personally, it gives me the feeling that the dog is given candy for some trick (and the viewer for watching a movie).
It is clear that the specifics of the series and the film (and even more so the prequel) are completely different, the series has much more tools and means for high-quality disclosure of characters and plot arcs, but still, this is not an excuse for hack-work.
And all the action scenes that were in the trailer. they remained just action scenes, without any meaning, subtext and, often, drama.
There also remains some question regarding the age-related changes between the prequel and the film, but I will not presume to judge specifically.
In the end, I do not regret the time spent watching the film, but I expected much more than I saw.
