Story Movie
A year ago, during a super moon, people caught in the light of the moon suddenly began to turn into werewolves. A new super moon approaches, during which scientists are preparing to test a mutation-suppressing vaccine. But the experiment goes out of control, and now the two survivors of the laboratory massacre have to sneak through the streets swarming with bloodthirsty werewolves and try not to fall under the dangerous moonlight themselves.
Review 4K Movie
Another pandemic has struck the world: for a year now, humanity has been living in fear of the blood moon. The previous one brought an unexpected attack - about a billion people suddenly turned into werewolves under the influence of intense moonlight, and the planet was plunged into bloody chaos for a whole night. What triggers the conversion process has not been revealed, but it is known that everyone who is careless on the street is subject to the transformation. A year later, the population and the authorities have prepared for the arrival of the full moon. Survival conditions are simple: do not leave shelters and do not make noise. It is not hard to guess that the heroes of “Werewolves” do not intend to observe just two banal rules.
In the aftermath of the coronavirus epidemic, not only did Steven Soderbergh's movie “Infection” gain objective relevance, but an entire subgenre - pandemic horror - stood out. Quarantine, general confusion, fear of an unknown and unkillable virus turned out to be the perfect fuel for low-budget horrors all over the world from Taiwan to Paraguay. Like the sad memories of Covid-19, the vogue for this kind of storytelling is slowly fading, showing up less and less frequently in flashes like director Stephen S. Miller's Another World. Miller.
To cross a relatively fresh story of a global epidemic with an old as the world story about lycanthropy is at least an interesting idea. However, the creators of the horror could not go further than a catchy logline. Even with their current experience, it's hard to imagine how lazy humanity is, when faced with the threat of “Doomsday Night” created by werewolves, they could only come up with a year-long recommendation to lock the door tighter and stay out of the moonlight. Working without respite, scientists (the main character of the picture microbiologist Wesley played by Frank Grillo represents them) developed a unique spray, saving from the effects of the moon for as long as 30 minutes. To test the miracle drug selected volunteers, but apparently forgot to put a timer and missed the moment of transformation of the unfortunate in bloodthirsty monsters. As a result, Wesley had to fight his way to the family of his dead brother a year ago, recognizing the inability of the scientific community to solve problems with the help of brains.
The plot of Werewolves is as chaotic as it is banal. And the jumping story is supported by inept editing and ridiculous dialogues, during which the characters then break down into quotes about wolves and humans, then explain their actions, and then just swear for no particular reason. Add to that cliched characters - you can guess unmistakably what will happen to everyone by the end of the movie from the first minute of their appearance on the screen. The creators work out the declared horror in the list of genres with the help of silhouettes of werewolves in the rain and smoke and close-ups of rubber grinning faces. And yes, “Werewolves” is exactly the case when the use of practical effects refers not to the nostalgia for inventive movies of the 90s, but to the cheapness of production.
One could have turned a blind eye to technical flaws or restrained acting if the audience had been immersed in the rich world of a country that survived the lycanthropy epidemic. But, alas, even here the authors of “Werewolves” went over the top, leaving all potentially successful developments at the concept level. Men who organized a full-scale hunt for werewolves, a group of mysterious cultists hiding underground, madmen who took the curse for a blessing and happily threw themselves into the arms of moonlight - dozens of interesting characters remained statisticians on Frank Grillo's way to the final battle. Perhaps Stephen S. Miller intended to develop the ideas of the picture in a sequel, but with all the other inputs, the probability of a sequel tends to zero.
“Werewolves” is a movie of missed opportunities. All the sensible ideas glimpsed in the movie do not leave the embryonic state, and the characters will be erased from memory faster than the dawn. It seems that the main task of the film's team was to show Frank Grillo's naked torso, but whether the audience is ready to pay for such a thing with an hour and a half of their lives is an open question.
