Review 4K Movie

There is a perception that remakes are evil. In fact, it is not always and not necessarily. Of course, sometimes there are offensive flops like the remake of “A Nightmare on Elm Street”, but almost simultaneously with it came another remake - “The Wolf Man” based on the script of the classic 1941 film. The mass audience, far from horror, may not know about this film, but the original “Wolf Man” - is a classic like "Dracula ‘ (1931), ’Frankenstein ‘ (1931), ’The Mummy ‘ (1932) and ’Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde ” (1931). All but the last were released by Universal Pictures, and their rich legacy is still well remembered at the movie company. Year after year, attempts to reboot the so-called dark universe continue unabated, but each time something goes wrong.

It's hard to say why the new version of The Wolf Man failed at the box office. Perhaps in 2010, the audience was simply saturated with horror movies, because then the theaters stormed and the first part of “Astral”. Since since 1941, the requirements of the audience, to put it mildly, have changed, then in the remake of “The Wolf Man” all the parameters are strengthened many times. Everything became darker, and to increase the fear, they added screemers, which sometimes irritate too much. This detail is voiced quite often by those who did not like the remake, but still there is a lot of good here. The appearance of the werewolves very carefully repeats the design of 1941 and the movie even won an Oscar for them. Quite often in third millennium movies (such as Van Helsing) werewolves are shown as literally wolf-like, with long muzzles that weigh down their heads. The fact that such heads make it uncomfortable for monsters to move around was realized in 1941, so in both the original and the updated “Wolf Man” the werewolves resemble wolves, but do not lose their human features.

Some scenes, such as the public transformation into a beast, turned out to be very spectacular and make the audience really excited. This was not in the original movie, but it is crazy interesting to watch it now. There is only one small remark: the creators of special effects are too fond of showing how the fingers are turned out on the hands. The same scenes can be seen, for example, in 2011's "The Thing ”. The number of murders in “The Wolf Man” in 2010 times a hundred times more than the number of killed in the original film, and this is a very vivid indicator of how over time changing ideas about the scale of ferocity and fear.

To diversify the mythology of the film, director Joe Johnston (my respect to him for the third “Jurassic Park”!) added a mention of the Zhevodan, but to my great sadness removed all references to aconite. Perhaps the main difference and omission of the remake compared to the original is the lack of refined atmosphere. The darkness, the moon are all great, but it lacks some of the magic that the 1941 movie had. Also, the motivations of some of the characters seem questionable and even contradictory. The main character's father was supposed to be an ambiguous and interesting figure, but it all looks very unconvincing. At the same time, however, the movie can be praised for excellent or at least good acting. The cast here is almost as strong as in the original movie, because the main roles are Benicio Del Toro and Anthony Hopkins. The main female role went to Emily Blunt, who is now known primarily for horror films. In the background in the “Wolf Man” runs Hugo Weaving, which is easily recognizable even with a mustache in the spirit of the XIX century.

It's too bad that this “Wolf Man” wasn't the starting point for Universal's new dark universe. It had the same chances as “Van Helsing”.
