It's no secret that once a certain picture gets a certain success, immediately a lot of other directors borrow its individual ideas and try to produce something relatively similar. And the success of such films as “A Quiet Place” and “Bird Box” has launched a number of obvious followers, to which we can include this movie directed by I. L. Katz.

What happened to our known world? Why has civilization fallen and people have gone feral? Why did speech become a sin? Where did these monsters come from? Except for some minor details, all of these questions are literally left out of the movie. In turn, the director of this film I. L. Katz, as well as the screenwriter and producer of this film Simon Barrett much more enthusiastically raise the now fashionable and already a little tiresome theme of patriarchal society, the cruel treatment of men with women, the difficult fate of women and the like. I will separately note that I am not against such moralizing on the screen. Even on the contrary, when it is done in an interesting and profound way, as for example in Lee Whannell's “Invisible Man”, it is really interesting. However, in this case, the authors of the picture go head-on and literally on the break. In this regard, the theme is presented in a very trivial way.

It cannot be said that I. L. Katz's portfolio is impressive. Nevertheless, the director has worked on such excellent series as “Swamp Creature” and “The Ghosts of Bly Manor” and it inspired some optimism about the quality of the product before watching it. However, some of that optimism faded long before half of the screen time had passed.

It is impossible to call the direction and the picture as a whole bad. However, we are facing the very case when the picture has the most impersonal and trivial directing. As if the movie was created by a neural network, and not by a really talented director. Which is a shame considering the impressive potential of the very idea of the picture with absolutely no dialog. In fact, this opens up the possibility for the director to develop the narrative not with dialogs, but with artistic decisions and on the level of visual component. However, Katz seems to have lacked either talent or budget. At least the monsters look like the crowlers from Neil Marshall's “The Descent”, but “in the smoker's variation”.

The only bright spot of this tape is the performer of the main role Samara Weaving, who really tries, actually single-handedly drags the whole movie and easily outplayed all the other actors combined. It is even a shame that the actress with such an interesting appearance and excellent acting data have to play in such a passable picture.
