This movie has some of the most polarized opinions I've ever heard - you either love it to bits, or dislike it to the point of disgust. It is attributed to such a huge pile of flaws, as if some great genius filmed it and completely screwed it up. At the box office, it failed with a deafening crack, despite a quite stellar cast, a solid budget and a good promotion, indeed, it is not easy to perceive this movie. It's absolutely impossible to say: 'Guys, watch this movie for sure - it's a breakthrough', because if there are movies for amateurs, then 'Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow' is in the first three of such movies. When watching it, the most important thing is to 'catch the wave', to understand where the wind is blowing and to catch the right mood, then this movie can become 'yours', otherwise you will be out of the theme and will be, to put it mildly, disappointed.

This movie is a unique and unique surrealistic fairy tale. It's filmed in an amazing way. It doesn't matter what and how it happens, because the script and plot are banal and not very interesting, but the style is the main advantage of the movie. Really original and stylish movies appear very few, and here the action unfolds in an absolutely marvelous world, and looks like a delirious dream. The color scheme initially gets on your nerves, but you have to get used to it, you realize that in natural color the film would look like another banal action movie. Filmed in a unique way, it acquired a dead gray color texture, cold, blue-pale shimmering of all objects, on which some 'living' places suddenly stand out in an unusually bright color, such as, for example, the bright red lips of Gwyneth Paltrow or the film “The Wizard of Oz” shown in the theater.

The movie plunges us into a Kafkaesque atmosphere of hypnotic half-sleep, but it doesn't mean that the movie is boring, just that everything in it is a bit fuzzy, dark, blurred, as if slightly out of focus, and the most interesting and amazing things happen in it. According to the absolutely delirious, but from this even more charming scenario we will run along with the heroes in the sky on airplanes, fight with some mysterious robots and supermachines, meet strange monsters and all sorts of freaks.... We will get into the world of the comic book, which lives according to the laws of Salvador Dali, and looks like the world of 'Distant Rainbow' of Strugatsky brothers.

The whole movie is one solid special effect, but, in fact, that's what it was made for - to show the audience a new, experimental way of shooting and a new kind of computer processing of the movie, which, judging by the reaction of critics and viewers, will take root not soon, if at all will have the opportunity to survive. People are ready to flock to the movies for any tasteless crap like 'Spider-Man', and as soon as something goes beyond the narrow traditional world, it is declared 'out of sympathy'.

Of course, the movie has no semantic load, it works not for the viewer, but for itself and its authors. The actors are all standard American beauties and beauties, but, however, they have nothing to play - as I imagine that the poor actors are running from nonexistent robots and monsters in an empty studio, a tear comes to my eye. But they all look buzurprechno. Beautiful Gwyneth Paltrow, who thanks to the above-described style has acquired a kind of divine glow around her already beautiful blonde head. The beautiful Angelina Jolie suddenly lost an eye in the manner of a Tarantino nurse, and the handsome Jude Law smiled very beautifully and cleaved the air beautifully on a beautiful fighter jet.

But, I repeat, here the actors are only scenery, in which abundant and stylish special effects play their main role. Yes, I almost forgot, the film is very generously peppered with flat, but quite effective humor, which does not let us forget that we are still a comic book, and not a serious sci-fi saga with a claim to cult status.

For those who haven't seen this movie yet, but are going to watch it, I would say - almost read the reviews, look at the photos from the movie, be ready for it - maybe you will catch the wave, it will be easier for you to perceive it and at the same time there will be less swearing against this not bad, in general, quite bold and beautiful movie, or rather, not a movie, but a large-scale experimental special effect.
