Story Movie

He is the Cobra, a one-man police assault squad, and he gets the bloody job that no one else wants (or dares) to do. Review 4K Movie

The end of the 1980s. Ah, what a time that was. While Steven Seagal fought against drug lords and corrupt politicians in the film Above the Law, Arnold Schwarzenegger ran through the jungle in The Predator. Sylvester Stallone wrote the script for a film that would later become as iconic as the films starring Steven and Arnold. That film was Cobra.

He is Lieutenant Marion Cobretti (Sylvester Stallone), nicknamed Cobra, a very tough cop, an expert at catching psychos, a specialist like no other. He is always serious, whether it's teaching local punks a lesson or finding the next psychopathic maniac. The best at what he does, he never plays by the rules of the cops, he plays by the rules of the criminals. It's not his style to look for a softer solution to the problem. And although Cobretti is accused of excessive cruelty, and he himself often breaks the law, his methods are effective and efficient. That's why Cobra is sent on the most dangerous missions, and when things get really bad, weak-nerved cops panic and shout, “Call Cobra.”

The script, written by Stallone himself and based on “Fair Game,” may not have a particularly twisted plot or bright and unexpected twists and turns. The plot is simple: a maniac nicknamed “The Night Killer” is on the loose in the city, sparing no one and killing everyone in sight, regardless of gender or age. For a long time, the police do not assign this task to Cobra, as the authorities do not like the methods he uses to catch criminals. The chief even gives Marion the nickname “Mr. Do It Your Way.” However, when the number of corpses reaches a critical point and there are no clues in the case, Cobra steps in. In the course of capturing the local maniac, he will come across a secret sect called “New Order,” which is backed by an entire army of criminals. Will Cobra be able to protect the only witness in the case and stand up to this armada of fanatics who will stop at nothing to kill her? Cobra will turn a small town into a bloodbath, but he will do everything to save the life of an innocent girl.

The chase and shootout scenes are shot magnificently, and although more than 20 years have passed, they look no worse (albeit not as impressive) than in modern films made with the help of computer technology. It was very nice to see that Stallone performed most of the stunts himself, even though at that time he was a Hollywood superstar and could have taken it easy, but in the shootout, chase, and hand-to-hand combat scenes, he does the stunts 100%.

The film's soundtrack is, of course, not Bill Conti's genius creation from Rocky, but Sylvester Levay still wrote an excellent musical accompaniment that should be on the computer or disc of everyone who likes this film.

Yes, in some ways the film may seem cruel and violent, but it wouldn't be the same without the scenes where Stallone's character douses a guy with gasoline and, saying “I give you the right to remain silent,” throws a burning match at him. Or the final scene with the words, “There will be no trial, the laws are left outside the door, and here there is only me.” In short, it's a fantastic film that only gets better with age, as they don't make movies like this anymore. I don't know which of the modern action films can be watched as many times as Cobra and still be as enjoyable as the first time.

To sum up, these are not modern action films, which are a far cry from the classic action films of the 80s and early 90s. There are no longer lone heroes like Stallone, Seagal, Schwarzenegger, or Lundgren were in their day. That's why watching movies like Cobra a couple of times a year brings on such nostalgia.

Nowadays, DVDs with such movies are priceless and should be in every movie lover's collection.
