Review 4K Movie
Kickboxer is a sports action movie.
Kurt and Eric Sloane are two inseparable brothers. As if one solid link, protect, care and support each other. Eric Sloan older brother - kickboxer, world champion in heavyweight. Kurt Sloan younger brother is a lawyer by profession. In the world they have no one more valuable than each other. From the outside it is perfectly visible their strong brotherly love.
During the fight for the championship title Eric is offered to go to Bangkok, Taiwan, and as a world champion to perform in this distant Asian country. Arrogant and confident of victory, Eric accepts the offer and decides to go to defend his title in front of the local Taiwanese champion, Tong Po. Little does he know that he will face a completely different culture, a completely different fighting style, a different 'animal' motivation and lust for victory. The brothers arrive in the country, admire the local sights and prepare for the fight. It's getting close to the fight and Eric is getting ready to enter the ring and asks his brother to bring ice. Kurt, doing his brother's errand, stumbles into the locker room of the champion Tong Po, where he is crazily crumbling the wall with his bare bones. Seeing this, Kurt tries to talk his brother out of the fight, but he's too easygoing and his head is too hot. During the fight something irreparable happens, Eric is defeated and in addition, through the fault of Tong Po, becomes disabled.
What should the younger brother Kurt, whose brother will never get back on his feet again, do now? Accept it or take revenge on the champion and defeat him? But how? His skill level is limited to a couple of simple combinations. Thanks to them, you can't win. Luckily for Kurt, he meets a former Vietnam veteran, Winston Taylor, who helps him in this difficult situation and directs him to an old man-teacher Zian. He's the only one who can help the guy win and avenge his brother....
Kickboxer came out almost exactly a year after the sensational Bloodsport, which illuminated a new star in Hollywood and gave the audience a new hero, Jean-Claude Van Damme. Of course, the box-office success of Bloodsport played a role in the producers' decision to create another movie on the subject of fighting in the style of full-contact karate and as a result, Jean-Claude had the idea to create a movie in which he would fully illuminate his training, according to him, he really wanted to show the methodology of his classes and almost similar to his way, the way of becoming a fighter.
The responsibility for the appearance and creation of Kickboxer, oddly enough, is almost entirely on Jean-Claude's shoulders, even though there are two names like Mark di Salle and David Wharf in the credits, don't think they are the main directors and producers. Jean-Claude made up the story, he paired up with his friend Frank Dukes to choreograph the fights, and he was practically responsible for shooting and putting the movie on screen. The only other person still involved in the filming process was David Wharf, who was the chief cameraman. Mark Dissale, on the other hand, only managed the whole process of creation, as the main producer.
We must admit that Jean-Claude managed to transfer his idea to the screen and make the film, loved by millions. Even after 18 years, in its 'masher arts' genre, the movie can easily not just compete, but surpass its rivals. Although, of course, this is due to the fact that nothing worthy of the genre has been released since the mid-90s.
The main advantages of the movie - a simple, but very kind and positive story, the plot based on the antithesis of hero - villain, perfectly conveyed atmosphere of training, held under the cool music and beautiful plans, an excellent villain (performed by Van Damme's friend in life Michel Kissi), whose name could easily become a nominative and of course still young and gorgeous Jean-Claude Van Damme.
In general, the opposition of the two images of the hero and the villain turned out to be very catching. Throughout the movie, the first one very well does the deeds that correspond to his good and righteous nature, and the second one does some very successful nasty things, thanks to which the viewer hates him even more than in the beginning....
Basically, the whole movie comes down to the final scene. To the final fight, where Van Damme's character demonstrates everything that he has learned from his trainer and all the rage that lurks inside him. The fight, of course, is symbolic. There is a really beaten battle between good and evil. For many people, it becomes just a kind of an urge to reach the top. Someone after it immediately runs to the gym, and someone goes to boxing classes with only one thought: 'If Van Damme's hero could do it, why can't I?' It's great.
Kickboxer is a movie about human resilience and perseverance, about the triumph of principle, desire for revenge and character over the word 'can't' or 'don't want to'. This movie is made simply, but with taste and effort. The movie itself for its 18 years has already gathered a huge army of fans around the world and is rightly considered one of the best representatives of the genre.
