There is a category of films, you know, directorial films, or more commonly, auteur films. In these films, the director's powerful ego is unobtrusive (as it were) but clearly visible. Everything in such films, from the costumes to the soundtrack, is subordinated to the overall concept, without deviating one iota, which ultimately results in a unique, newborn style.

Wes Anderson is one such director. His style is bright, unique, and recognizable from the very first frames. This style is built on three pillars: picturesque and inspiring images, characters (the words they say and the actors who play them, with rare exceptions, are brilliant), and the director's overall irrepressible inventiveness.

The characters in “The Life Aquatic,” and in Anderson's films in general, are like paints on a canvas, each with their own role and unique color, with a bouquet of shades. They are what mainly hold the viewer's attention. But the most colorful character in “The Life Aquatic” is, of course, Steve Zissou, a mix of Gloria Swinton from Sunrise Boulevard, the mythical Jacques-Yves Cousteau, and, it seems, Murray himself (or at least his stage persona of the 2000s), an aging eccentric with a sad look and a sea of charm.

The visual part of the film is amazing. There are a minimum of cuts in the scenes, carefully selected colors, and animation that gives the film a magical feel. But despite all the precision in “The Life of Aquatic,” there is no sense of cold professionalism; rather, in a wonderful way, naturalness reigns supreme.

Ultimately, all these aspects lead to the most valuable result: emotion. The viewer's emotion. But there are, as they say, nuances. Will every viewer experience these emotions, or at least understand them? Personally, looking at the film from one point of view, I cannot answer, because, as you can guess, I am delighted with the film, but if you read various notes/reviews/comments, it is easy to catch a recurring theme, namely, that this film is NOT for everyone. It's a film for a narrow circle of admirers, or at least for Anderson fans.

I don't disagree. No film is liked by everyone, and here we have such an oxymoron.

Well, why don't you try Anderson's “fairy tales” yourself? Perhaps the circle isn't so narrow after all?
