Story Movie

A well-armed gang of hardened criminals raids the capital's bank branches with impunity, brutally shooting the guards. Two police departments, headed by former friends Denis Klein and Leo Wrinks, will investigate these crimes. They have completely different methods of work and goals. The two policemen begin a joint investigation, and when Vrinks comes as close as possible to the solution, getting into a difficult situation, Klein sneakily sets him up, not realizing how it may end.

Review 4K Movie

The title of the movie uses an iconic and easily remembered address, an undeniable landmark. However, there will be neither romantic views of Paris nor the Eiffel Tower replicated in movie postcards.

The word “cop” is perfectly familiar to everyone from Hollywood movies about cops. Not everyone has heard its French equivalent, “flick”. I learned the meaning of this French jargonism by watching Olivier Marchal's movies. His flicks don't have much in common with their overseas counterparts. Officially they serve the law, but their motives are less law enforcement. In “Quai des Orfèvres 36,” the police are a clan, a family. And the principle of “friendship - friendship, and service - service” is not for them. In this closed community of their own vindicate, enemies mercilessly persecutes, even if it harms the common cause, keep “black cash” and methods are not used to divide into legal and not.

“Waterfront” is a police drama without the traditional antagonism of bad and good cops. The confrontation between Leo Wrinks and Danny Klein is certainly there. Klein's methods are blatantly unethical, simply criminal; but Leo does not shy away from overstepping his authority. Perhaps the only uncompromised policeman in the movie is Eva. And she is the one who suffers for her scrupulousness.

The picture is rather depressing, but, in my opinion, harsh criticism and ridicule of the police (depending on the genre) is characteristic of French cinema. Just think of Inspector Christini from “Doberman” or the underdog cops from “Crimson Rivers” who can't pronounce “Bill Gates” correctly. Olivier Marchal tried hard and undermined the image of the brave French police with his pictures. Considering that he was once in its ranks, his presentation of material looks convincing.

Gerard Depardieu seems to me not without reason hyperactive. During the noughties, he managed to star in more than half a hundred movies. “Gérard Depardieu” is a real trademark, and its copyright holder is well aware of this. In fact, he is often only required to be present in the frame. His appearances in films like “How Much Are You Worth?”, “Babylon N.E.”, etc. add weight to the films, but it is not for such roles that he has become a symbol of French cinema. The role of Danny Klein is perhaps the most dramatic role he has starred in in recent years.

Daniel Otoy disposes to himself in any of his roles. But it's after 36 Quai des Orfèvres that I pounce on every movie with him: I'm sure I won't be disappointed.

Olivier Marchal's police dramas have a special atmosphere. If you compare “Quay” with his other films with similar themes (“Gangsters”, “Once Upon a Time in Marseille”), you find a remarkable similarity. In the center of the plot Marshall invariably places two police officers, irreconcilable adversaries, settling personal scores directly during the investigation. In such a situation, these two will go to any forgery, disregard the interests of the case, they will not stop, even if their squabbles suffer innocents.

Secondly, in “36 Quai des Orfèvres,” as in the other two films by Marchal, the top brass of the police have their nose to the grindstone. This is already a criticism of the system. One or two crooked cops are a necessary evil, but if the fish rots from the head, criminal police chiefs and department heads are a symptom that cannot be ignored.

The third major motif is the theme of revenge. The movie has a hard time convincing me that revenge is really necessary. In Marchal, Leo Wrinks or Louis Schneider (both played by Daniel Otois) take revenge with their eyes open, knowing full well the consequences. The hopelessness of their situation is so palpable that, if you do not approve of their actions, you sympathize with them.
