To be honest, it's not the best film about boxing and/or redemption. It's not Rocky, let alone Raging Bull. But somehow, despite being predictable, Fuqua has pulled off this old-fashioned trick again. You can guess the ending from the start, but there's an opportunity to enjoy the journey itself.

We see a champion at the top of the boxing world, but later he faces tragedy and then spends the rest of the film trying to find himself through many difficulties and regain his title in a final fight against an impressive opponent. Another example of a fighter who went off the rails but came back to entertain the audience. In addition, they didn't forget to include the good old training montage. Only this time, it's not to Joe Esposito's “Eye of the Tiger” and “You're the Best.” It's to the teeth-grinding rap of Slim Shady himself, aka Eminem. It's logical that the film falls into all the clichés of the genre and focuses so much on Gyllenhaal, but it doesn't disappoint in the slightest.

Other actors, such as Forest Whitaker, 50 Cent, and little Oona Lawrence, bring the story together. Of course, each of them is a stereotype, but the relationships, either very tense or platonic, contribute very well to the development of Billy, who reflects many legendary martial arts figures. Here we witness how a fighter is unable to understand that it is time to stop, ultimately losing his legacy and family. Mike Tyson, Fedor Emelianenko, and Roy Jones (in a cameo) appear. It's a pity that only in movies can you return to your peak form and regain lost positions.

The main antagonist is overly expressive, i.e., elevated to the absolute, and upon rewatching, he even reminded me of Conor McGregor. All this trash talk, which Billy ultimately succumbs to, only signals that the main confrontation is still ahead. And this confrontation is with himself.

It's a fairly simple and straightforward story, but Antoine Fuqua's directing style and the excellent acting make Southpaw a must-see for any fan of sports dramas.
