A story about two men who become friends because they don't want to sell out, don't want to lead a life that doesn't match their feelings and aspirations. Jeffrey is a professional assassin who, on a mission, accidentally deprives singer Jenny of her sight. The blind singer and the killer develop a mutual affection, but the closest relationship Jeffrey has with the police inspector following his trail, who recognizes the assassin as a kindred spirit. Geoffrey wants to pay for Jenny's eye surgery, but to get the money he must agree to perform one more, final, he hopes, assignment.

“The Killer” is a great film. Not good, not grand, not significant, but simply great. An imitative blend of sophisticated European crime films and gritty American crime dramas of the 1960s and 1970s, shot in a couple of weeks on a shoestring budget, it became something valuable in its own right, spawning a wave of imitators and an undoubted cult following. All films about killers released after 1990 look back to John Woo's low-budget masterpiece. This includes the highest quality and most popular films, such as Léon.
But how can they compare to the greatness of the Hong Kong opus! Woo understood that no one would give him the budget and time he needed to develop realistic shootouts, so he found a way out by turning low-budget chaos into ballet. Chow Yun-Fat doesn't kill his enemies: he dances with his weapon, firing forty shots from a single magazine, tearing off whole chunks of pliable flesh. Only in Killer do they first fire a control shot to the head, and then another dozen bullets into the already dead, falling body. Here, the world is, as it were, two-dimensional. The villains are disgusting to the point of ugliness, the heroes are noble to the point of the same ugliness. Plus, there is a blind singer who performs a heart-wrenchingly sentimental melody. But the two-dimensionality is only apparent. Behind it lies eternity. A doomed eternity in which the mercenary and the cop have more in common than one can imagine. An eternity in which an army of extras awaits around every corner, called upon to perform the function of evil. And not everyone will find their bullet. This has happened many times before and will happen many times again. Triviality. But the idea of eternity is even more trivial. However, none of this has anything to do with greatness.

By turning the constraints of production into a feast of kitsch, Wu has come much closer to sensual reality than the calculated and cynical Besson. A film in which dynamic and lyrical scenes are equally memorable. Both are riddled with quotations. A film that lives in each individual scene. A great film.
