Review 4K Movie

In the 1970s, the quality of Godzilla films began to decline noticeably, and the franchise continued to appeal only to enthusiasts. But 20 years after the very first film, something new was released—Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla. It was directed by Jun Fukuda, whose previous films about the King of Monsters were sometimes quite funny, albeit with their own meaning.

The main thing that surprises about this film is the depth of the story and the interesting concept. At the time of its release in 1974, there were no other films like it featuring giant monsters. Whereas Godzilla's enemies had previously been mutant monsters, aliens from outer space, or descendants of prehistoric animals, now the dinosaur-like monster is opposed by its mechanized counterpart. The idea may seem banal and even ridiculous, but compared to Godzilla vs. Megalon, this film soars to unprecedented heights. The key elements inherent in previous films from the Showa period remain—Godzilla's battle with a giant creature and even the presence of aliens in the plot. But how different everything looks here! If the Kilaaki in Destroy All Monsters seemed ridiculous, in Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla, the alien invaders are not only not funny, they are also scary. The episode in which the alien reveals its true form is truly terrifying, and the scene of its attack on Keisuke is even scarier. The new monster King Caesar is also genuinely terrifying in the film, and the kaiju battles with Mechagodzilla are truly thrilling. Even after more than four decades, the film still looks spectacular, making it one of the most remarkable in the entire franchise.

But the film is not only enjoyable because of Godzilla and other monsters—even without them, the plot has a twist connected with the exoticism of an ancient Okinawan legend. An adventure subtext with the unraveling of mysteries of the past that foreshadow the end of the world—isn't that worthy of being called romance? But most importantly, this film has the most unexpected plot twist of all the first twenty-nine films, which confused people, aliens from space, and all viewers alike.

Of the actors, Goro Mitsumi, Shin Kishida, and, of course, the incomparable Akihiko Hirata, who is capable of playing any role. The leader of the aliens pleasantly surprises with his charisma. It would not be an exaggeration to call him the best antagonist among the non-monster characters in the entire franchise.
