Story Movie

Desperate to deal with Godzilla by conventional means, Japanese scientists and engineers create Mechagodzilla - a combat robotic analog of the giant lizard.

Review 4K Movie

After the rather dull and strange film Godzilla vs. Mothra: Battle for Earth, novice director Takao Okawara decided to bring back the lightheartedness of the Godzilla film universe by returning to the earlier film Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah. Once again, for the next installment about the giant lizard, the creators turned their attention to the Showa period, from which they borrowed three monsters at once: Rodan, Mechagodzilla, and even Godzilla's newborn relative.

The first thing the film deserves credit for is taking into account the technical errors made in the previous installment, where the artificial buildings were so obvious. In Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla 2, the computer and visual effects became much better, and the monster scenes look realistic even by today's standards, from the battle between Godzilla and Rodan on the rocky coast to the spectacular confrontation with Mechagodzilla amid the skyscrapers. But even though the title hints at a connection to 1974's Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla, this new robot is completely different. Now it is not a ruthless alien killing machine, but a mechanism created by humans to protect against giant monsters. And it's magnificent! After watching the film, many will want to control such a marvel, as well as the pteranodon robot designed by Kazuma.

As for Rodan, true fans will greatly enjoy the return of this character, once again reminiscent of prehistoric times when there was no place for us humans on Earth. The giant pterosaur undergoes a transformation in this film that will also delight fans.

In the shadow of these three giants, a storyline unfolds with Baby Godzilla hatching from an egg in a laboratory. Unlike Minilla from Son of Godzilla, this character really resembles a dinosaur, but most of all, it resembles its parent, whether adoptive or biological. In 1993, the computer graphics boom was just beginning, so it's no surprise that Japan continued to use models and costumes to create all the monsters. This gives the film a sense of authenticity that no graphics can replace.

At the center of all the events is Kazuma Aoki, superbly played by Masahiro Takashima. The motives and character of this character will seem familiar to many. Life is multifaceted, and you can be a pilot, an engineer, and just a good guy who doesn't abandon his friends in trouble and never forgets his hobby. Rio Sano did a great job playing Azusa, who has to temporarily take care of a “very big kid,” and Megumi Odaka is still awesome as Miki Saegusa, who's been a regular character in the franchise since Godzilla vs. Biollante.

It is thanks to Miki that Godzilla's image is completely changed in Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla 2. Once again, humanity is faced with the undeniable truth that life in all its forms, even distorted, has a right to exist. And who are we to disrupt this harmony? We can try to intervene, turn everything back, destroy it, finally. But in the end, we will find ourselves standing among the smoking ruins, and before us will rise Godzilla and the entire long history of our planet, in which we have so far been given only a moment.

Takao Okawara tried to bring Godzilla back to the familiar perception of the 1960s and 1970s. It cannot be said that he succeeded in this task, as he introduced many new elements, but this is precisely what makes Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla 2 a special film that will delight all viewers, not just fans.
