Story Movie

In the 2000s, Pat Calhoun and his girlfriend were members of a radical left-wing extremist group, and when a murder occurred during one of their raids, his comrades were forced to flee separately. Sixteen years later, the man lives in Southern California under the name Bob Ferguson and is raising his teenage daughter, whom he forbids from even having a cell phone due to his constant paranoia. Bob's fears prove to be well-founded when his old enemy, Colonel Lockjo, begins hunting him and his daughter.

Review 4K Movie

I know that many people have mixed feelings about this film. Some of my friends love it, while others are perplexed. Both sides have a right to their opinion. And so do I. So, I liked it, as they say.

The film's director, Paul Thomas Anderson, has a very strange track record. It's full of tons of trash, but there are also strong films like Boogie Nights and Magnolia. And the epoch-making masterpiece There Will Be Blood. So you can expect anything.

The film begins as a topical picture about leftists and their methods. A group of young extremists rebels against state oppression using quasi-terrorist methods. On the one hand, they seem to be engaged in a charitable cause, rescuing women, children, and other disadvantaged Mexicans who have fallen into the clutches of the “fascists” from the immigration service and want to get to the “Shining City on the Hill.” But these revolutionaries themselves appear to us not just as reckless young men ready to do anything for their ideas, but as real mad, antisocial hooligans with heads full of garbage, swearing foully and communicating through dirty insults and humiliation. They behave so disgustingly that you feel a completely physical revulsion towards them. You feel much the same way about the head of one of the migrant camps, played by Sean Penn. He is repulsive in his appearance, his behavior, and even his movements, as if he always has a swollen penis in his pants and his underwear is full of dried excrement. The dirty sexual deviance of this drill sergeant and the leader of the extremists completes the picture. And, of course, all this revolutionary bravado ends in senseless murder, after which the authorities catch the gang, and those who shouted the loudest about the revolution are the first to betray their comrades. The organization is crushed, and those who did not go to prison go deep underground with new documents and names, scattering throughout America. So DiCaprio's character, under the name Bob Ferguson, with his infant daughter in his arms, begins a new life filled with meaninglessness, alcohol, drugs, and paranoia. But the past won't let him go, and 16 years later, it comes after him in the form of the very same drill sergeant who was tasked with finishing off the survivors in order to earn his ticket to the exclusive club of white power brokers.

This first part of the story looks like a very serious study of both the leftist movement and the system of power based on fascist methods. And it is this part that seems heavy, predictable, and dirty. Watching the first half hour is physically difficult. At the same time, it creates a certain mood for viewing.

And then everything is turned upside down. The director abruptly changes the genre of the film, and a full-fledged whistling dance and uniform hooliganism begin. With infectious daring, the director steers the boat of history along a fine line between genres - between drama, comedy, political pamphlet, action movie, and satire bordering on the grotesque. Judging by many of the reviews and comments I have read, the majority of viewers were simply unable to comprehend this rapid transition between genres and the way the material was presented, and were unable to adjust accordingly. They continued to perceive the film as a political study that had unexpectedly descended into some kind of farce. This prevented them from fully appreciating the true nature of the film — bright, delightfully crazy, and devilishly funny. Del Toro is remarkable here, and DiCaprio is simply magnificent. His wild, stoned gaze is completely unique. And his cries of “Fuck you and your password, I've been drinking and doing drugs for 16 years, I just don't remember it” are so human, not cinematic!

The only downsides here are the first 20 minutes, which are nauseating and boring, and the final chord with “mom's letter,” which is sappy and moralizing and doesn't fit into the story at all. Otherwise, it's a solid eight.
