Michael Mason, a former MI6 special forces operative, lives as a recluse with his dog on one of Scotland’s small, secluded islands, hiding from his past. From time to time, his colleague arrives by boat with his niece, Jessie, to bring him supplies. One day, during a storm, the boat capsizes; the girl’s uncle dies, but Michael manages to save Jessie, who suffers a serious leg injury. Realizing that the leg cannot be treated without medication, Mason makes his way to the nearest town on the mainland, where he is spotted by MI6 agents. Soon after, a special forces unit lands on the island where Michael and Jessie are staying.

No matter how you look at it, this movie is solid! And yes, you should know going in that you’re in for a typical “dad-action flick,” where old man Statham will be smashing the bad guys’ faces in like in some 1985 *Commando*.

Although you can find references to other films like *John Wick*, which, in my purely personal opinion, falls far short of the films starring Statham in every respect.

I’d argue that there’s, let’s just say, “chemistry” between the characters that seems to appear as if by magic. The main character is a rather feisty girl, but the hero still tries to reveal himself as the film unfolds. At one point, it even seemed that the lighthouse keeper was a maniac whose goal wasn’t to save the girl, but rather that the girl would have to save herself from him. The hero’s character is truly terrifying from every angle. And only as the story unfolds do we realize we’re dealing with a man with a complicated past.

No matter how you look at it, you could even draw a parallel here with Tom Hanks’ *Cast Away* or something like *Robinson Crusoe*. Only here, as usual, the lead role is played by a “killing machine.” Yes, the hero’s invincibility should be added to the list of flaws, but this is more than compensated for by the cold-bloodedness with which he deals with the bad guys. As for the catchphrases, no one has banned them here. They’re present, but they’re woven into the character’s personality in a very organic way and don’t come off as forced.

My summary is as follows.

If you’re looking for something to watch with a kid—you can watch this with a kid.

If you like Statham killing everything in his path—you absolutely have to watch it.

The film is a great mix of thrills, drama, and action. I really hope viewers will appreciate this movie, despite the “clichés” that Statham has often been accused of in recent years.
