Upon learning that his brother in Los Angeles has been seriously wounded, Lyon Gautier deserts from the French Foreign Legion, which is stationed in a remote region of North Africa. On the run from two Legionnaires who have been ordered to bring him back at any cost, Léon reluctantly becomes a participant in illegal modern-day gladiatorial fights, where combatants battle with their bare hands for the entertainment of the wealthy. ‘Lionheart’—arguably the best film starring Jean-Claude Van Damme

And what makes it so are two elements that complement each other perfectly: a plot that is simply stunning in its spirit and drama, and, of course, the performance of Van Damme himself.

The “Muscle from Brussels,” playing Léon Gauthier, proved to everyone that he is truly an actor—and an Actor with a capital “A.” He demonstrated his capabilities not only in combat. If we consider action actors of all times and nations, the undisputed best is the true master of kung fu and karate, Bruce Lee, who was perhaps the first to spark audience interest in films of this genre. As for modern Hollywood actors, in my opinion, when it comes to the quality and spectacle of fight scenes, no one can matchVan Damme—and it’s unlikely anyone ever will!

The collaboration between Sheldon Lettich and Jean-Claude Van Damme has given the world quite a few excellent action films (‘Bloodsport’, ‘Double Impact’, ‘The Legionnaire’).

In addition to Warren, these two men worked on the screenplay for ‘Lionheart’, each of whom contributed something special. Van Damme himself always approached his films with a great sense of responsibility, participating in the production not only as an actor. Just think of the excellent action film *In Search of Adventure*, where Jean-Claude served as the lead actor, director, and screenwriter.
