Once upon a time, the Hong Kong mafia brutally and ruthlessly massacred the parents of twin brothers Chad and Alex, who were miraculously saved in a long ago bloody shootout. Fate scattered the brothers on different sides of the ocean: one grew up in California, the other stayed in Hong Kong. And now 25 years later, through the efforts of a loyal friend of their dead parents, the two brothers meet to make the perpetrators of that crime strongly repent for what they once did.

Actors such as Jean-Claude Van Damme are simply made to be real action heroes. That was the case in the 80s and 90s, and most likely this trend will continue for a long time to come, at least as long as the action genre with shooting and fistfights remains alive. Considering that even one Van Damme was interesting to watch back then, the promise of showing two of them on screen at once was incredibly intriguing. Nowadays, it's easy to combine a thousand identical people in one frame, but back then, seeing one actor in two different roles on screen was truly impressive. So what if the twins only embrace at the very end? What they do before that, throughout the film, never ceases to amaze.
So, twin brothers Chad and Alex meet 25 years after the brutal murder of their parents. One is from sunny California, where he taught karate and stretching classes. The other became a tough smuggler in Hong Kong, as he grew up on the streets, unlike Chad. And the difference between the two Van Dammes is the most interesting thing about Double Impact. Their first meeting is particularly amusing, when they literally clash heads. Of course, Alex, as portrayed by him, is much cooler and more ruthless, and this Van Damme is much more interesting than his naive brother from California. The entire film hinges on how they gradually gain each other's trust.

Because there is nothing else special in Double Impact. There is fairly standard shooting, a small amount of action, and the only impressive fights are at the very end. Bolo Yeung played the bad guy perfectly, although his death could have been played out in a more original way, considering that he was made the brothers' strongest opponent. The character of Frank, who takes care of them throughout the film, was very well conceived. And in general, the cast is great. But the overall dynamics are somehow weaker. After all, the double “Brussels muscle” was not given a chance to fully unfold here. Without it, the film would have turned into a completely forgettable Hong Kong action movie. This is easy to see when you look at all of director Letich's subsequent films, which are significantly weaker than Double Impact. So, a huge thank you to Van Damme!
