Following the rapid decline of the peplum genre—when grand-scale historical films ceased to interest audiences—a revival took place, marked by the release of Ridley Scott’s "Gladiator". Its huge success prompted Hollywood producers to seek out winning ideas for new, grand-scale historical blockbusters, and Warner Bros. was one of the first studios—following the creators of "Gladiator"—to embrace the revived peplum genre, presenting us with its version of "Troy" in 2004.

The film is set around the 14th century BCE. After a long war, Troy and Sparta had finally made peace, and King Menelaus’s chambers welcomed two princes from what was now a peaceful nation: Hector and Paris. While Hector devoted himself exclusively to matters of state, Paris, meanwhile, began an affair with Helen, Menelaus’s wife. They were deeply in love and could not imagine life apart from their forbidden passion. And so Paris decided to take Helen with him to Troy.

Of course, the enraged Menelaus could not tolerate such a betrayal and asked his brother Agamemnon, the ruler of all Greece, to assemble an army and march directly to Troy to wage war. Agamemnon had long wanted to conquer this impregnable city and was only too happy to set out on the campaign. Very soon, a devastating and bloody conflict began at the gates of Troy, one that would drag on for a full 10 years, as neither side was willing to back down. However, taking Troy wouldn’t be that easy; it would require more than mere military might.

The first and most important thing to know about Wolfgang Petersen’s film is that there’s not a hint of the Olympian gods in it. The filmmakers deliberately left them out to make their film more down-to-earth and believable, as if it were nothing less than a true story. Of course, we can’t know for sure whether the Trojan War lasted that long or whether these historical events actually took place, but we must admit that everything looks quite convincing in Petersen’s film.

In addition, I can’t help but say a few words about Brad Pitt’s magnificent performance as Achilles. He has no respect whatsoever for his king, Menelaus, and is generally very tired of the war, but he has no choice but to go into battle and prove his superiority. And his duel with Eric Bana’s Hector was, for me, perhaps the film’s highlight.

It was also a pleasure to see Orlando Bloom here, who played Paris. He, of course, is not cut out for battle at all. His domain is romance and beauty. However, that’s exactly how things were in Homer’s time, so I have no complaints about Bloom’s portrayal. The main thing is that he looks great alongside Diane Kruger. They really do complement each other well. And yes, I believe that beauty is what will ultimately save our world!

“Troy” is a brilliantly staged historical blockbuster, one of the best of its kind. Of course, the computer-generated special effects are visible in some scenes, and that slightly detracts from the realism, but there are still plenty of battle scenes filmed live, and that’s worthy of respect.
