Review 4K Movie

Jean-Claude Van Damme used to be incredibly popular. So were the movies he starred in. This movie was on the most worn-out VHS tape in my home collection. Movies these days are nothing like they used to be. I’ve remembered this film ever since that time. It was impossible not to remember it. The tape was so worn out it had holes in it—holes even a moth couldn’t make.

What did us kids love about Van Damme movies…? Of course, the way he flailed his legs around. Now that I’m older, I realize you might actually be able to swing your legs like that, but if you try to move like that in a real fight—you’ll get your ass kicked. Alas, this movie isn’t about fighting. And the action sequences don’t come as often as in *Bloodsport* or *Kickboxer*. But that’s the last “alas” I’ll apply to this film. After all, the movie is simply excellent!

This film has a detective element. And that helps drive the mystery. In an American (well, what else?) prison, inmates have started dying. Burke (J.-C. Van Damme) is assigned to go undercover as an inmate to “get to the bottom of this mess.”

From that point on, this is the only aspect of the film that really grabs me. That’s just my personal opinion. But even more important is one particular moment. There’s this guy—a dangerous degenerate—The Enchanted One (Sandman). Burke once had the “pleasure” of crossing paths with him.

While the main plot is unfolding (an internal investigation that didn’t really interest me much during today’s viewing…), Burke is thrown a “bonus”—that very same Enchanted One. Now that’s a showdown! It all culminates in a first-rate showdown between the former and the latter. And this is the highlight of the entire film and a bridge to the next installments of the series titled “Van Damme.” A series that can be considered as such. A series that technically exists, but all viewers know exactly what I mean. After all, Van Damme, much like Statham, essentially plays himself from movie to movie—and he does it brilliantly!

So, this is a wonderful movie with a muddled plot—one that’s so unnecessary it doesn’t even matter—which is really just there to tie everything together. But the movie is simply good. It’s like a little box that just opened up…
