Review 4K Movie

The sequel "Maniac Cop", released two years after the release of the first part, added new emotion and depth to the film that were not inherent in the original. Here at some point you even begin to feel sorry for the maniac, it is not for nothing that William Lustig (the permanent director of the entire Maniac Cop trilogy) once worked on the film Maniac (1980), where it was better than in other slashers that it was shown what it means to be typical American street maniac.

Pity for the maniac in uniform, even in view of his cruel and bloody deeds, is, in fact, the only difference from the original, because this time the maniac was shown to us from a different angle, and we also learned some facts from his past (more disclosed details of the interlude from of the original film). But, hitting the film adaptation of the life of Maniac Cop, the film has significantly lost in dynamics. Probably, William Lustig wanted to surpass his own "Maniac" in order to make his new universe more famous and collected. He did not succeed in this, because the quality bar and, in general, the tone of the film were set in the original (1988).

Loss of dynamics spoils the atmosphere of the film. You don't feel that balance inherent in the first part of "Maniac Cop". The murders have become somehow too stereotyped, and the maniac in uniform now for some reason neglects shelters and, in general, elementary conspiracy: destroying his own image of a secretive maniac in every possible way, in the sequel he, like a terminator, walks with a stone face and demolishes literally everything in his path. Someone may like the killer's new repertoire, but it seems to me that nothing should have been changed in this regard. It looks unconvincing.

Unfortunately, the sequel is also not capable of intriguing like the original. The plot is transparent and you foresee all possible turns in it before they happen. For a slasher, this is a very gross mistake. A slasher must always intrigue and keep the viewer on their toes. At the expense of the tension of the picture, it is also worth saying a few words. It just doesn't exist. You watch the film at some moments with a sinking heart, but in general it looks more like a typical American action movie this time (only, for that matter, a B-class). In general, Larry Cohen was too clever with the script this time.
