Henry and his son shelter a wounded man with a bag full of money. When a gang of armed assassins arrives on the bloody trail, they have to hold their ground. How wonderful when a versatile and character actor gets a chance to prove himself in a leading role, as in the case of Tim Blake Nelson in "Old Henry," the 2021 western starring him. It's 1906, a frail, withered Oklahoma widower farmer who wants to live out his days cultivating the land by honest farm labor without any interference from the outside world, raising his teenage son Wyatt (Gavin Lewis) in austerity and pacifism, occasionally going hunting with his brother-in-law Al (Trace Adkins).

"Old Henry" begins with a scene worthy of director Clint Eastwood. A sadistic sheriff named Ketchum (Stephen Dorff); his deputy Dugan (Richard Speight Jr.) and a Mexican tracker named Stilwell (Max Arciniega) have formed a posse and are looking for fugitives. One of them is caught and tortured to get the information they need, and then he is killed in cold blood and without sentiment. The other is wounded, but manages to escape. Change of plan - a skinny and disheveled widower Henry, working on his rocky land, is digging a trench, forging huge rocks from it, helped by his son, who resents his father for not letting him hold his uncle's gun. Henry's brother-in-law, Al, also helps Henry in his hard work. There is a sense of complete isolation of the farm from the outside world. But that feeling quickly changes when a riderless horse wanders onto the farm's hillside. Henry finds the wounded fugitive in the creek, a revolver and a bag of money thrown nearby. And here, for the first time, we sense by Nelson's play that something distant from Henry's life makes him wonder what to do next. And the farmer's first wish is to run away from the wounded man and his money, home to the farm, but something clicks in the frame and we no longer see farmer Henry, but a very different man, very dangerous and experienced and has been through such situations many times before. Henry takes the wounded man back to his house, heals his wound and ties him to the bed, while he himself goes on a reconnaissance mission.

The film's script is above reproach. While the film slowly made its way to audiences and came to NETFLIX, it managed to pick up a respectable award at the Venice Film Festival 2021. The result is a great brutal western that is a pleasure to watch and yes, it is clear that it follows the mold of the genre, there is more to it than meets the eye, it is a true festival movie after all. Not for nothing there are references to the Gospel, but I won't reveal the plot ending of the film, and for some reason I'm sure you will get an unforgettable impression and aesthetic pleasure while watching it. And try to listen and hear the dialogues of the characters, everything is clear and there is nothing unnecessary. Maybe, and I would like so much to believe, that this film is worthy to get an Oscar, at least in a couple of nominations.
