A meteorite fell on the outskirts of a small town. This event stirs the imagination of the locals. This is the first Contact, but... the Martians didn't come in peace. It took them a long time to closely study the earth to begin their invasion. In just a couple of days, all the cities were destroyed, the armies of the entire world defeated.

It seems that the doom of mankind is inevitable. There is no salvation! And Dr. Clyton Forrester tries to keep his beloved Sylvia from the nightmare going on around her. Will mankind be wiped off the face of the earth?

There are a myriad of film adaptations of H.G. Wells' famous science fiction novel. Some of them turn out to be really good, some of them are downright crappy. Fortunately, the film in question is not only a cult movie, but also manages to scare the audience even after more than fifty years have passed since its release.

As you might have guessed, much of the book's plot has been remade. From now on, the action takes place not in England, but in California; the trainers, who have already become iconic, have been replaced by flying cars, but the basic concept of them has not been changed. Despite this, the picture quite accurately captures the spirit of the Welsh story: mass riots, panic, and the helplessness of the military forces of the land.

The War of the Worlds is laced with nice little things. For example, the destroyed Eiffel Tower. Doesn't it remind you of anything? I remember a similar picture was in Planet of the Apes, but instead of the tower was the Statue of Liberty. All these tricks were used to increase the effect of the inevitable subjugation of the earthlings, by the way, not to no avail.

Everything is shot and done masterfully - you cannot take your eyes off the screen. The actors play well and of high quality, but some of the characters spoil the overall impression. Ann Robinson is very overplayed, thereby adding a bit of implausibility to the picture.

Everything is balanced, everything in moderation. I would not dare to call the film too long or too short. In the hour and a half that the film runs, the creators managed to put the entire original idea, without losing anything.
