The Adventures of Baron Munchausen 4K 1988 Ultra HD 2160p
The only one who knows the whole truth about Munchausen is the baron himself. The legendary hero tells the story of his incredible adventures.

But did he really fly on a red-hot cannonball, fight a three-headed griffin, travel to the moon, see a naked Venus emerging from a seashell, and finally come face to face with Death himself? It's impossible to believe... but could the famous Munchausen lie?

Review 4K Movie

The ageless Baron von Munchausen in hard times must come to the aid of the people, for without him the evil Turks cannot be driven away from the gates of the fortress. Only the pragmatism and rationalism of the townspeople, led by the elected head - a born bureaucrat and hookworm - can prevent him. If they do not believe in the existence of the Baron and his exploits, how can he save them from certain death? If they do not believe him, he will not be able, twenty years later, to repeat his great deeds: to fly a mile and a half on a cannonball, to visit the moon, to get out of the belly of the sea Wonder-Jud and once again to escape from the old woman with the scythe. But what if Baron Munchausen himself stops believing in himself? Then people are doomed to perish, unless...unless, at least one, even the smallest spectator believes in his existence.

Screening the adventures of Baron Munchausen is not easy, because even with the latest means to reliably portray certain details of his deeds is incredibly difficult. And it seems that Terry Gilliam has chosen the right way to implement this burning problem. The sets and costumes of his film look like cheap theatrical trappings of a provincial theater. And that's because they are. The flight of characters and other subtleties of special visual effects look as unnatural as possible.

And it's all justified. Terry doesn't try to fool the audience by slipping them quality trinkets and distracting them with spectacular and beautiful baubles from the most important thing. The magic. The magic of cinema, if you will. Or the theatrical performance. In his hands, the world's most virtuoso faker becomes a real hero. Cardboard sets turn into real walls. Incredible adventures and uniquely-impossible abilities of the characters come true right before the eyes of the audience. Perhaps at the beginning of this magical spectacle, the audience will skeptically grin at everything that is happening, but gradually, no longer fidget in his chair, he fully immersed in contemplation of the adventure. Clinging to the screen and unable to take his eyes off the screen for even a second.

It is strange to believe it, but Gilliam was able to show a really beautiful world with such imperfect instruments. So much so that when you finish watching it, you no longer remember the individual details, the ridiculous costumes, the hastily stitched and painted scenery. Yes, the trickster didn't even try to make the tale more believable, because it's just absurd!

"The Adventures of Baron Munchausen" is an old-fashioned, atmospheric fairy tale, which, through its characters, brings to the masses the idea that without great inventors mankind is doomed. Doomed to a boring and joyless existence in a world that tolerates no deviation from the written rules. Where life is just life, death is eternal peace, and there is no art. But as long as there are people capable of convincing the viewer that a man, along with a horse, can pull himself out of the sea by the plait, we are not in danger.
