The success of the first film about the adventures of Mick Dundee, a hunter and tracker from the Australian bush nicknamed Crocodile (US$328 million in total box office receipts with US$8.8 million spent on filming, plus a Golden Globe for lead actor Paul Hogan) naturally prompted the development of a sequel. The second part of Crocodile Dundee was released in 1988. This time, the director was John Cornell, one of the screenwriters of the first film, who received an Oscar nomination for his work. The sequel's budget was increased to 15.8 million Australian dollars, but worldwide box office receipts fell to 239 million US dollars. Nevertheless, Crocodile Dundee 2 was a commercial success. Despite all the changes in the film crew, the cast remained the same: Paul Hogan plays Mick Dundee, Linda Kozlowski plays Sue, an American journalist who falls in love with Mick, and their mutual friend is played by John Mayllon, for whom this film was his last feature film.

And if we've already mentioned that the sequel saw changes in the film crew, we should also point out that the genre was slightly altered: while the first film is an uncompromising adventure comedy with elements of romance, Crocodile Dundee II is an adventure action film with elements of comedy. Incidentally, the script for the sequel was written by Paul Hogan himself, together with Brett Hogan (I don't know if he is Paul's brother or one of his five children from his first marriage). And here's what they came up with: Mick Dundee continues to live with his beloved Sue in New York, watching TV series, but Mick misses his homeland very much, and Sue understands this. Suddenly, they get a chance to return: Sue receives a recording of a murder committed by an influential Colombian mobster. In his native bush, Mick can always protect the woman he loves, and the thuggish gangsters are not yet aware that they are in hostile territory. Mick, with his characteristic satire, thoroughly mocks the heavily armed killers and, of course, triumphantly emerges from a difficult and deadly situation.

In Crocodile Dundee 2, we see Mick and Sue's journey in reverse: in the first film, they travel from hot Australia to the bustling world of New York, and here they return. It would be wrong to call this trivial and “rehashing old ideas” because the thrill of seeing the wild bush and Mike feeling right at home there is still there. The decline in commercial terms can be explained by the fact that many viewers are always skeptical about sequels to successful films, and we can add to that the fact that Mick Dundee is no longer the mysterious hunter and bushman with his famous hat and knife. But in any case, it is worth emphasizing that the adventures in Crocodile Dundee 2 are very, very exciting, and there is even more spectacle (let's not forget that the sequel was created as a light action movie). The peculiar Australian humor was still there, able to make people laugh and, thankfully, not succumbing to the trend of “let's joke about sex, it's so fashionable now!”.

Former TV series actor and Australian television comedy show host Paul Hogan has become so synonymous with the character of Mick Dundee that it's extremely difficult to imagine him in a business suit. But what makes us, the audience, so happy is not always considered good for an actor - Paul Hogan remained a one-role performer. But why worry? Many, many people know Paul Hogan outside of Australia. Linda Kozlowski gazes lovingly at Hogan's character throughout the film, and it's understandable—two years after the release of Crocodile Dundee II, they got married. This gives the film a touch of romance that existed in reality and wasn't just acted out; nowadays, we call this “chemistry.” John Maylon's character is amusing in his self-confidence, which could have gotten him into trouble when he fell into the hands of bandits, but everyone knows that Mick Dundee doesn't abandon his own in battle. Among the supporting actors, you can spot Charles S. Dutton (known for his role as the psychiatrist husband of Halle Berry's character in the mystery film Gothika) and Louis Guzmán, who has played over a hundred supporting roles and is recognizable for his “unattractive appearance.”
