Review 4K Movie

The very story behind the making of this magnificent film is truly remarkable and combines a series of setbacks and fortunate coincidences.

It all began in 1952, when John Huston—the future director of the film, who had adored Rudyard Kipling’s books since childhood—discussed the possibility of adapting the outstanding writer’s short stories into a film; Kipling had written them while living in India as a journalist. In 1955, Houston traveled to India to finish the screenplay and select locations for on-location filming.

At the very beginning of the project, it was planned that Humphrey Bogart and Clark Gable would star in the lead roles. The first draft of the screenplay was completed in 1957. But Bogart died that same year, and Houston shelved the screenplay until better times. Clark Gable continued to show great interest in the screenplay, but, unfortunately, the outstanding actor also passed away shortly thereafter.

In 1967, a second draft of the screenplay was written; Houston tried to interest Marlon Brando in it, and later Peter O’Toole and Richard Burton, but once again the project failed to come to fruition.

In 1973, Houston revisited Kipling’s original story—which, in its literary form, is only 22 pages long—adding numerous elements of her own. Newman was very enthusiastic about the idea of starring in this film alongside Robert Redford. Newman read the script and called Houston. “I think this is the best script I’ve ever read,” he said. “But, to be honest, I don’t think it’s for me. I believe both roles should be played by English actors. For God’s sake, John, give them to Connery and Caine.”

Sean Connery and Michael Caine were old friends and had long wanted to star in a film together. Sean Connery recalled that they were both simply captivated by the characters, who were extremely interesting. The actors rehearsed their roles, spontaneously adding numerous touches to their characters’ personalities.

The film differs from the original source material in that the story is told from the perspective of a single person—Peachy (Michael Caine). We witness the story of two adventurers who, one fine day, decide to set off for the mysterious Asian country of Kafiristan to conquer it and become its kings and rulers. To this end, they put their intentions in writing on a document signed as a witness by Rudyard Kipling himself, and set off on a difficult journey.

And then epic events unfold.

These two educated men, presenting themselves as God’s representatives on Earth and guided by their luck and common sense, will conquer—without any weapons—tribes living a primitive lifestyle and truly become the rulers of the entire country, revered as gods.

But therein lies the tragedy. The soul of an adventurer is always the soul of an adventurer. Sean Connery’s character, having deceived everyone… in his desire to become king… will forget that he is just an ordinary man. And he will decide to be a god. Having already deceived himself. And that… is always punishable. And the end of this story will be…. but why get ahead of ourselves?

In closing, I’d like to say just two words about this film. IT’S WONDERFUL. If only because this is—objectively—Sean Connery’s best role in his acting career. The pinnacle. At the same time, I’d like to note that Michael Caine’s performance in this film was even better than Connery’s—more powerful, more profound… and their chemistry… creates unforgettable characters. Just as unforgettable is the character portrayed by Christopher Plummer—the role of Rudyard Kipling himself. And the moral message about true human nature is equally unforgettable.

Films like this will never be made again, so watching it and adding it to your collection is highly recommended. After all, these are the classics—milestones in cinema.
