A long time ago, dragons, creators and keepers of water, lived side by side with people in the magical land of Kumandra. Peaceful life came to an end when the Druuns appeared. The spawn of darkness turned people and dragons into stone sculptures, and only the magic of the dragon woman Sisu was able to drive away evil creatures and disenchant people, but it did not affect the dragons. Kumandra split into the states of Heart, Fang, Claw, Spine and Tail, and the magic dragon stone was kept in the land of the Heart, which was ruled by Raya's father. He dreamed of uniting the lands, but due to human greed and envy, the artifact shattered. The ruler of each country got hold of a shard, and the druuns again began to dominate undividedly.

Several years later, Raya and her faithful companion Tuk-Tuk fearlessly roam across the scorched desert, exploring the remaining rivers and not losing hope of finding the last dragon - the last hope of people to defeat the Druuns.

The story originates in the ancient analogue of China, which survived the invasion of a certain magical substance that turns all life into stone. In this unequal struggle, the dragons were the only hope. They enclosed their power in a sphere that is able to drive away these creatures, but they themselves turned to stone. After 500 years, people were divided into five tribes. One of them became the keeper of the sphere. But scattered peoples could not tolerate this, wanting to possess it too. The rebellion caused the sphere to split, freeing the demons outward. Now the young warrior Raya needs to find the last dragon and save people.

The cartoon evokes ambiguous feelings. On the one hand, incredible redness and magic of the east. On the other hand, the insipid main character and chaotic plot, which chooses the laziest way to introduce the viewer to the world. And this is a sea of ​​exposure. The first 20 minutes simply bombard you with the lore of the universe, each dialogue in one way or another explains one or another element of the story. Only towards the end of the first act, the story begins to breathe deeply, freed from the need to explain everything.

In fact, this is a very simple and told many times story of collecting elements of a magical artifact that should fix everything. The heroine has a bitter enemy, a set of eccentric helpers, she has a cute animal. All the elements are familiar to the viewer, so there is nothing to surprise with, except for an unexpectedly strong ending.

Great visuals nowadays are already the norm for large-scale projects, especially Disney. Working with light, physics and elaboration of details is aerobatics. The world is realized brightly, and skillfully delineates tribes and territories.

But at the same time, it is safe and suitable for any movie viewer, the figures of the heroes will be successful with children, unobtrusive humor will not offend anyone, it will press on the necessary emotional points and at the right moment will tell you when you can cry. A pure and uncompromising studio product, behind which there is no soul, everything fits into already worked out templates that can be rearranged, changed the backdrop and you will get a new film.

There is no ideological conflict, as such a drama, everything lies on the surface, everything that you need will be said and more than once, so as not to be forgotten. “Raye” simply has nothing to tell the viewer, the cartoon does not ask questions, the heroine is not faced with moral dilemmas, a straightforward quest that focuses only on the visual.

As a cute and entertaining product, the cartoon does its job. But my problem, as a viewer, is in my expectations: a desire to see a strong female character, topics that will be of interest to both a child and an adult, that after the end of the viewing, something will remain with you.

But when you have the main and only passage that you need to trust people and it all comes down to this, you understand that history is not worth the scale that is invested in it and ambitions simply do not justify themselves. This project is a clear indicator that Disney needs to focus on pushing boundaries rather than returning to proven formulas.
