Story Movie

The year is 2054. Paris has become a labyrinth where every step is tracked and recorded on film. Everything is overshadowed by Avalon, a company that trades in beauty and youth. Suddenly, a young scientist named Ilona is kidnapped from the company, and police officer Karas sets out to find her. Embarking on a dangerous investigation, Karas finds himself in a parallel world of corporate espionage, organized crime, and genetic research, where he discovers the truth and encounters miracles that come at a high price.

Review 4K Movie

In the Paris of the future, as in everything else in the future, power will inevitably end up in the hands of some corporation. I don't know whether McDonald's, Pentium, or Philip Morris will be the most powerful company, but it is clear that the services (products) of this organization will be hugely popular. Renaissance invites us to look at a world ruled by a corporation offering rejuvenation services. Apparently, by 2054, people will be so unwilling to grow old that surgeons will have their hands full. And research in this area will be extensive. Then there is the simple law of economics about supply and demand.

The law of cinema says that if you don't want to be original with the plot, come up with a style. The authors of Renaissance didn't think long and decided to capture, if not the viewer's brain, then their eyes. Only the plot itself is interesting, despite its secondary nature: a cool cop fighting global evil to save a girl. This part is, of course, a bit weak. On the other hand, the part where thoughts turn to eternal life and brilliant discoveries is much more interesting. The author's latest cry against corporate monsters is captured on film, or at least on disc. The release is not the most substantial, but the main thing is that the film itself is there, the original soundtrack is included, which is enough, and for those with particular tastes, there is a well-designed menu.

At first glance, it's a stylish film, of course, but after Rodriguez's Sin City, this plus of the picture is negated, despite the fact that everything here is drawn, and the shadows falling on the characters' faces from all sides are delightful. Well, it's drawn, with transmitters hung on live actors, so it will be more realistic, yeah...

Okay, we get it, the plot is not new, mid-century noir style plus modern technology, the atmosphere is calm, there is little tension. What remains when there are no actors, no makeup artists... What remains is a bare dystopia, a world ruled by those who satisfy the demands of others. After all, the police officer, predictably, turns out to be on the other side of the law, committing illegal acts, etc. The police leadership is also not averse to using cosmetic services, since it so easily parts with its best agent, who fights for the truth without mercy.

But what's the point when a cosmetic corporation runs everything and hunts down the hero? The invisibility suits used by the corporation's agents are superior to the suits that hide the identity of the characters in “The Fog,” although the artistic value of the latter is much greater. The invisibility suits are as if they don't exist at all, and they are no match for the hero.

In short, if the battle ahead is not for the drugs of the future or the money of the future, then it will definitely be for eternal life (oil probably hasn't run out yet).
The minds of humanity have long been interested in this problem (well, eternal life), and I myself am not averse to living longer to see the end of eternity and the edge of infinity. The kidnapped heroine of the film has found the answer to the riddle of nature, but she is not the first; there are also cunning passions hidden from mere mortals living in this cosmetic future.

It seems like looking for a black and white cat in a black and white film. What difference does it make what the film is about when it is predictable and lacks atmosphere? No, if you want, you can certainly delve deeper into this world of the future, but it is only revealed a little here, precisely from the perspective of that corporation, mentioning the war, and it is not very clear what the rest of the people are breathing. It's hard to believe that a little later, people will become obsessed with eternal youth when they are already over 70. I think the obsession has already happened; it's no wonder that plastic surgeons earn good money.

Action in a film like this is not really important, so the authors reduced it to one chase, a few attempts at hand-to-hand combat, and three shots. It's hard to imagine a black-and-white explosion, for example, or other action scenes, so in this respect, the film is inferior to the beloved Equilibrium.

In short, objectively speaking, there is nothing left except the Renaissance style of execution, but there is also a big nod to Rodriguez and an implicit nod to Besson (Angel A) (not to mention the films of the 1930s-1950s), so I don't see anything original in the film. Perhaps the ending was impressive, with all its possible interpretations, but that depends on the viewer's desire. Thank you to the authors for that.
