Story Movie

The story of Atari Kobayashi, a 12-year-old boy in the care of the corrupt mayor of Kobayashi. When, by decree, all the pet dogs of Megasaki City are banished to a huge landfill, Atari travels alone in a miniature flying machine to the garbage island to find his faithful dog, nicknamed Spotts. There on the island, along with a pack of new mongrel friends, he will embark on an epic journey that will decide the future fate of the entire Prefecture.

Review 4K Movie

I watched the movie Isle of Dogs. It's an extraordinary story about simple things. Polite, sensible dogs from former homes on the island get used to their role as hermits with Olympic calm. Their feelings are restrained and deep, samurai-like calm, but loving and alive, like fire inside ice. Just like them on the island, the assistant of the murdered professor is truly saddened, but not by magic, but by overcoming pain and a sense of duty, she transforms from a crying and mournful woman into an activist obsessed with an idea. This assistant, the professor himself, and Atari, with eyes as expressive as in anime, but with more soulful and realistic faces, evoke empathy and even sadness. The originality of the story about dogs on the island, the combination of animation and puppet animation, is appealing. For example, the dogs: they are so touching, with their fur blowing in the wind and their shining eyes, in which genuine tears appear.

The professor's speech in defense of the dogs is a call for compassion. His emotions are somewhat restrained, as is probably expected in Japan, but they are sincere and deep. The injustice, resentment, and betrayal that the professor speaks out against are so touching that tears well up in my eyes, and I catch myself thinking that I want to watch the film again to see the details that make it up, to find out how Spot the dog and not Spot ended up on the island, what exactly was the relationship between Spot and the Chief, what trick did Mandalka show the Chief when the dogs returned to the big city.

Of course, as someone who loves fairy tales, I was pleased that good triumphed and the dogs returned to their owners, and even the tyrant Kobayashi gave his kidney to his ward Atari at the end of his life, thus opening his heart to goodness.

I also enjoyed the subtle humor in Chef's conversations with Mindalka, in his reflections on corruption and the history of the conflict between cat lovers and dog lovers. As a cat lover, I was even surprised by my brief cooling of feelings towards my two little pets, who were overshadowed by my feelings for the haughty cats from ‘Isle of Dogs’.

Perhaps the cartoon is not only, and perhaps not so much, for children. It is a fairy tale that echoes the well-known story of the dog Shogun, because when Atari became mayor, he got so into character that he wanted to issue a draconian decree of death for anyone who offended a dog in any way. This upset me greatly. I liked Atari so much for his humanity that I really didn't want him to become a tyrant.

It seemed to me that the cartoon, as it was made with love for Japanese culture by a European director, is more adapted to European perception than, for example, ‘Akira’, which is bright and specific, requiring some getting used to.

In summary, Isle of Dogs is an original retelling of the good old parable about humanity and loyalty, about fortitude. I would probably recommend it to those who are tired of the hustle and bustle and monotony, those who are looking for support in a world of changing values and constant questions about morality.
