A group of former African-American classmates are going to a party in a posh forest house. When they arrive, they don't find the couple who arrived beforehand, but they do find a suspicious game room, and in it, a highly intolerant board game. Suddenly the doors are blocked, and now the pals have to answer tricky questions on a black history quiz, or else one of them will die.

Well, I will say that the synopsis for this horror comedy titled "The Blackening" definitely sounded interesting and made it seem like this movie from director Tim Story could be a fun movie to watch.

And thus, I sat down to watch "The Blackening" without ever having heard about it, prior to stumbling upon it by random chance here in 2023.

Writers Tracy Oliver and Dewayne Perkins ultimately only managed to put together a subpar script and storyline. The movie started out well enough, but the air quickly escaped the balloon, and the movie was deflated for the remainder of the playtime, which was most of the movie, sadly. Yeah, the storyline ended up being rather generic, and I have to say that the characters were generic, one-dimensional and essentially just all together unlikable.

The movie was sparse with comedy, and I wasn't brought to laughing even once throughout the course of the movie. Not even as much as a smirk could writers Tracy Oliver and Dewayne Perkins managed to get from me. And as for the horror elements in "The Blackening", well it was your archetypical youngsters-left-in-a-cabin-in-the-woods-all-by-themselves type of movie, so nothing new there.

The only face on the cast list that I was familiar with was Diedrich Bader, and he only had a minor support role to play in the movie. I will say that the acting performances seemed fair enough, just a shame that the actors and actresses virtually had nothing to work with.

"The Blackening" was a swing and a miss. And while I did managed to sit through all 97 minutes, then this movie is not worth the time, money or effort. Some of us suffered through this, so you don't have to. I wouldn't recommend you wasting your time on director Tim Story's movie, nor is it a movie that I will ever return to watch a second time.
