Peter Bogdanovich's tragicomedy with a beautiful, poetic title “Paper Moon” can quite deservedly be considered one of the best in its genre. Nowadays Hollywood doesn't make such movies anymore, the main features of “The Genius Swindlers” seem to have gone out of fashion, and the picture itself is practically unknown to modern, not retro, viewers. However, I can safely say that this movie is a timeless cinematic classic. Even if they make several remakes or similar “Swindlers” pictures, still Bogdanovich's movie will always be original, interesting and unlike any other.

The action of “Genius con artists” is set in the United States during the Great Depression and Prohibition. Fraudster Moises Pray is engaged in petty scams, selling fraudulent Bibles to gullible widows. Stopping by a funeral for a former mistress, he is tasked with delivering the deceased woman's daughter, a nine-year-old girl named Addie, whose father may be Moises himself, to her aunt's house. So it turns out that they start fooling naive people “on steam” ...
At first glance, the plot is not particularly peculiar and intriguing. But you don't have to read the abstract of this movie, you have to watch it. “Genius con artists” is built on brilliant dialogues, characters, musical accompaniment on the background of amazingly conveyed atmosphere of the States of 20-30 years. Maybe, of course, this is a loud word, but this picture simply can not help but like it, as everyone will find something different in it. I don't think there will be a single person who will hate this movie. Instead of snot and formulaic melodramatism, present in many dramatic comedies, in “Genius Swindlers” there are: subtle and special humor, a little bitterness and a powerful charge of optimism. Devoid of any clichés, this movie is a great mood lifter, thanks to which it can be watched several times.

And the last thing, because of what you should see “Genius con artists”, is undoubtedly the wonderful work of directors and actors. If a director has made a movie “with soul”, you can feel it immediately. In “The Swindlers”, thanks to Peter Bogdanovich, this quality is felt. And, of course, you can not leave out Tatum O'Neal, who played the role of Eddie. Her acting is more than just great. For all 102 minutes of the picture, nine-year-old Tatum on the screen was funny, touching, serious. What's more her facial expressions, looks, eccentricity, and astounding charisma. She even outplayed Ryan O'Neal, who played the role of Moises. Tatum is probably by far the best of all child movie stars. It doesn't matter that she's long grown up. Her performance in “Genius Con Men” honestly deserves ten points out of a possible ten, as does the movie itself.
