Review 4K Movie

Seth MacFarlane is known for his successful work on television, notably the animated series 'Family Guy'; however, this is his first time directing a feature film. The idea for this story came to the director over a dozen years ago, and 'Ted' was originally developed as an animated series, but the concept evolved into a complete story for the big screen.

John's childhood wish suddenly comes true and he gets the best friend he's always dreamed of. The animated bear cub instantly becomes a national sensation and basks in the glory, but as the voiceover says - popularity is fleeting, and 'as soon as you grow up - everyone on you...'. Well, you know what I mean. After a while Ted no longer seems like a miracle, the society gradually gets used to the phenomenon of his existence, and many years later, at the time where the plot of the movie starts, Ted is nothing more than a shabby 'former star', at that, quite promiscuous: profanity, alcohol and weed are integral parts of the life of the long-time 'brothers in thunder'. The 'spoiled' bear looks really funny on the screen and does his best. It seems that this is the dead end the picture could have reached if all the humor was based around the vulgar jokes of a shabby stuffed toy - but McFarlane is much more inventive, and despite the unoriginal (except for the talking bear) and sketchy plot fills it with concise and varied jokes that work on many different levels. In addition to R-rated vulgarities, there's social satire (the way Ted gets a job is just inimitable), celebrity banter, also manifested in numerous cameos, and various parody moments, both of typical genre clichés and of individual movies - all of which makes McFarlane's comedy unexpectedly complex and multi-layered. But most importantly, the action is filled with humor densely, evenly, and without any sags; and there is an almost complete absence of the misplaced melodramatic snot that the plot of such comedy stories so often stumble over.

In spite of the unhinged behavior of the heroes, assorted humor and banter about many stars, the picture does not slip into uncompromising cynicism and keeps itself within bounds, primarily due to the fact that all the central characters, including the bear, are very well written and have natural believable characters. That is, they look absolutely alive, their images are multifaceted; and the viewer laughs at the situation, but he does not want to gloat over the characters. We are talking here, of course, about the duet performed by Mark Wahlberg and Mila Kunis, supplemented by the performance of Seth MacFarlane himself, who gave voice and movements to the bear cub. These characters become close to the viewer, which is in complete contrast to the secondary characters, who look deliberately caricatured and one-sided; firstly, it is all the bosses of the heroes; Laurie's nasty rich boss, who harasses her at work, Ted's shallow employer, and John's boss, who adores Tom Skerritt; and also it concerns Ted's extravagant girlfriend, and Donnie, played by Giovanni Ribisi. The right placement of accents is spot on, and it adds warmth and sincerity to the relationships of the central characters in the picture.

'Ted' grabs your attention from the very beginning, maintaining a confident dynamic, firing off, at times, very unexpected jokes, and making you laugh again and again and again. Seth MacFarlane has made a carefully calibrated, complex, enjoyable and non-banal comedy, showing his ability to subtly feel the material and make, often, unconventional but winning decisions, which shows the undeniable talent of the director. Without question one of the funniest movies of this year.
