To summarize the plot: it's here. And it's on a decent level. That's enough, because...

Audiovisually, this movie is pure art. Every musical scene is tightly woven into the plot. They don't get taken out of it in any way. The transition from the dialog to the musical number is very smooth: the characters simply begin to speak in rhyme, more melodically, and then they sing. And the conventions that the genre allows allow you to both move the plot along, because the songs are prosaic in a good sense and work for scripted development, and to enjoy a terrific production. Songs here, as befits a good musical, perfectly reveal the characters, and it is also the music in Emilia Perez is the main comedic component.

It would be impossible to get the most out of the musical scenes without the acting of Zoe Saldana. She finally didn't have to be makeup on for hours before filming and, encouraged, gave out perhaps the best role of her career. She steals this movie, she sings, goes back to her dance roots, and shows good drama when needed. I wish her all the best and more statuettes. Carla Gascon is also good, but she mostly plays her material in the dialog scenes. This is, of course, not to mention the sheer difficulty of portraying a believable transition on screen.

Emilia Perez is about emotion, about the power of musicals, about great acting performances and about directorial style.

May I have a lot of interpretations of this movie to go through, and a lot of essays to review and read with all kinds of parsing. But I absolutely and completely got what I was hoping for. And the weaknesses of the picture are simply killed (in my eyes for sure) by the impenetrable armor that every musical gets. After all, this genre implies a lot of conventions and a creative, free approach. And Emilia Perez, with her operatic structure (the script was originally written for opera, yes, yes), has the right to nail everything, if she was able to captivate the viewer with the story and give this story an audiovisual of the highest level. This movie could well serve as a music video for some multi-genre music album. Because the music here, like the movie itself, is constantly shifting, changing its mood and style. And it's very interesting to watch it.
