A typical story from the life of rich noblemen: young Miss Dascoyne fell in love with an Italian “without a family, without a tribe”, got married, gave birth to a charming son Louis. And all would be nothing, but her prude father disowned his daughter, depriving both the inheritance and the title. Her husband soon died, and the former noblewoman had to work like a cursed to provide herself and her son with sustenance. Louis grew up and began to help her. But the hard life took its toll - the woman died, leaving her son nothing but a ghostly hope for a title. And even to bury her in the family cemetery failed - arrogant Daskoyny did not allow.

Louis knew his family tree by heart from childhood. The injustice of his relatives towards his mother was eating away at him like a worm, but her death was the last straw. Louis decided, first, to take revenge on the hated snobs, and secondly, to regain his rightful ducal title. And the title - for a second - will go to Louis on the condition that the other heirs pass away! Waiting for them to die naturally is not an option: too long. The only thing left is... yes, yes, a little help for them.

An elderly duke. A wealthy banker. A general, an admiral, an amateur photographer, a hunter, a priest, a feminist...Louis will not be easy, but he will find an individual approach to everyone: he will pretend to be a photographer or a lover of church architecture, will be hired as an employee in the bank. As a result, Dascoyne one after another die under circumstances that do not cause any suspicion - Louis's brains are cooked, that it is necessary. There are fewer and fewer obstacles to the coveted title, but another problem arises.

Louis was once in love with the charming, cunning burgher Sibella, and she chose a more promising groom over him. Then, when one of the young Dascoynes “passed away,” Louis unwittingly became a vest for his lovely widow, with predictable consequences. And love triangles, as we know, do not do good. So it turned out that after a bunch of murders Louis went to jail for the one that did not commit ...

Despite the “blackness”, the comedy is very sweet and kind, as far as it is possible for a movie where there is one murder per ten minutes. Each Dascoyne individually deserved to die in one way or another, although some of them were a little pity. Well, and played them all (!) Sir Alec Guinness, showing his undeniable talent as a master of reincarnation. He especially liked him in two roles: the priest and Lady Agatha. Dennis Price was also good - you can feel the breed in his Louis' appearance and behavior. Of course, I would like to mention the wonderful plot, which for 60 years has not become hackneyed and quoted-quoted. And the final chord simply kills the lying viewer.
