A continuation of the largely autobiographical story of teenager Antoine Duanel. He is weighed down by his position at school and in his family, and seeks to escape from the dull and dreary everyday life. After growing up, Duanel falls in love with and marries Christine, becomes the father of a child, then experiments with adultery, having an uninteresting love affair with Kyoko.

Stylistically indistinguishable from Stolen Kisses, Bed & Board tells the story of Antoine Doinel's life in Paris, his changing jobs and married life, just like in the previous film. There are no plot twists or drama in the film; an elegiac view of life prevails, and even the breakdown of marriage is not a tragedy. Truffaut called Claude Sautet the most French of directors, but the three films about Duanel (not counting The 400 Blows) can hardly be surpassed in their “Frenchness,” if by that we mean immersion in details, lightness, impressionism, and non-obligatory nature.

The film is almost devoid of gloomy and melancholic notes, with a contemplative view of society prevailing. In this sense, the hero's meeting with his wife's father in a brothel is indicative—a scene that could have been a source of awkwardness, shame, and even conflict in another film is completely emotionless here. Upon learning that there will be no trumpets or drums in Duane's planned book, the film's character recommends that the author name it “No Trumpets, No Drums.” This could also be the title of the three films about the adult Duane, which represent a kind of anthology of the maturation of an urban philistine.
